Reaper Praises.
I'd just like to take a moment, to once again...
sing the praises of reaper.
I think, in a time when A LOT of people, everywhere have come to a head with the old dinasours, you know who im talking about....
I've really had enough of the operation of Cubase...like, seriously...
The following have driven me insane:
- incompatibility of any 32 bit polugins natively
- Buggy operation of ALOT of 3rd party stuff.
- other crap.
last night, i once again decided to download repear's UNLIMITED trial. took 1 minute to download. 1 minute to install. 30 seconds to add my VST plugin folder, 15 seconds to select my Apogee as output....and what do you know, had audio playing, and stuff EQed, and happening UNDER 5 MINUTES WITH NO BS.... no bugs, 32 and 64bit plugins working side by side....
Cubase, and other BIG MONEY players in software need to get their shit together, it's seriously embarassing, and pure robbery....rant over. Never giving cubase money again. Anyone coming to terminal velocity with PT rage, i suggest do the same!

A big "Thumbs Up" for Reaper too.
Love it.
I've still got a Protools System, but it gets used less and less.

Re: Reaper Praises.
How do you find midi in Reaper?
Just had a look at it again and found it immediately a little clunky coming from Logic, but these things can be learned. Wondering how powerful it is as a midi sequencer - esp for film / tv scoring?

Re: Reaper Praises.
Depends, im not really using it for MIDI at all. mainly just audio, mixdowns, etc.
In cubase i guess the biggest pluses for me were the MIDI filters and Midi plugins, define "power" when it comes to MIDI?

Re: Reaper Praises.
Coming from Logic, 'power' means something like: the ability to comprehensibly route and filter midi data; the ability to edit and sequence CC data using step / list editors, the piano roll and the arrange window (e.g. copying and writing a CC sequence from one clip to another); the ability to modify midi clips using logical functions (e.g. invert all notes around middle C).

yeah, tbh im not sure about the MIDI side of it, i know it was an issue in tge past, but as its constantly being updated, those may have been upgraded, ive JUST gotten into it, so i still dont know much about midi,. i do know audio and mix routing is unparalleled in terms of flexibility.

Re: Reaper Praises.
Has anyone used Reaper as a ReWire device inside Cubase or Logic?
I'll probably not leave Cubase as I have too much work in that format and it would be a major pain to relocate it.
But if I could quarantine bad VSTs in Reaper and then access them in Cubase via ReWire I'd be very happy. (A bad VST will take Cubase down entirely, sometimes forcing a reboot).

Re: Reaper Praises.
all true - smaller footprint / run off a USB drive / choice of skins / fast boot etc.
but I'd like them to get rid of the hangover mix window controls from the edit window - dont like all those duplicated faders etc taking up screen real estate when all you want to see is edit channels....
and it would be good if Reaper really released the h/w when you shut it down.... there's a checkbox for that but it doesn't appear to release everything on my system....

Re: Reaper Praises.
I was just browsing the Reaper forum for MIDI discussions.
Apparently if you are used to the kind of MIDI editing found in Cubase/Logic/Sonar then you might find Reaper a bit frustrating.

Re: Reaper Praises.
yes, the Reaper programmers are constantly doing updates - very impressive - placement of the mix window controls in the edit window has been discussed for a few years on the Reaper forum but that layout hasn't changed..... it's not a biggie but Reaper does "sell" itself as being very configurable.
I found the Reaper MIDI configuration fairly similar to PT MIDI config (for external controllers, MTC etc) - neither was markedly better or worse than the other, but neither was what I'd call good (i.e. automated or intuitive.....).
Now, can of worms, does Reaper sound as good as <insert your favourite DAW> ??? - on second thought, don't answer that - that point has been argued ad-nauseum and unconvincingly elsewhere

I've got a mate that's battling with that one, he keeps swapping between Reaper and Nuendo.
Now if they could just bring out an update for Reaper that would alllow it to read and write Protools files they'd really have a winner!

I get the impression that with a bit of effort Reaper *could* replace PT for many tasks, but I don't use PT for MIDI.

Re: Reaper Praises.
..... my iLok got fried the other day (so PT is out of action for a few weeks until they activate the replacement licences - that's ZDT without the $100 priority fee.....)
So it's Reaper to the rescue..... downloaded and installed the latest 64bit version.... configured the preferences and control surface, setup a few banks of templates, .... imported some media, tested - 2 hrs down - all excellent.
jumping ship again

Re: Reaper Praises.
I switch between Reaper and Sonar. Have never even looked at Reaper's midi windows, I very rarely use midi but if I know I'll need to I use Sonar.
Have been thinking lately about getting Protools but $700 for software that doesn't do anything I can't already do (other than open other peoples' projects) seems a little excessive. Especially when you consider that my Reaper license cost me $60!

I occasionally use Reaper between lots of protools. It certainly is handy and very powerful. The price is pretty outrageously astonishing as well!
To me, Reaper and Protools is kind of like comparing a Virus TI to a Minimoog. It really depends what you are seeking in a DAW. Every other DAW company should take note of Reapers business conduct though!
