Oh no, I have hundreds of such examples.

In actuality both are excellent platforms (I own and use both - Mac with PT at the studio, Windows with Cubase at home).

I'm just critical of anyone who thinks one system is inherently superior to the other, as there is simply no truth to that. Personal preferences are fine, but there is no objective difference in terms of functionality or stability.

Safari has always been able to do it via the "activity" window.

Not wanting to over do negative stereotypes however..........
Back in 2007 some bright spark in PC land came up with this idea.

I don't think the viruses are java based per say, but rather delivered and executed through exploiting flaws in java software. The last decent attack I am familiar with on a mac was the flashback trojan that was delivered in exactly that fashion.

Apple released a fix for it pretty quickly too... so I don't think that platform independence is particularly existent, particularly in Apple's case where they seem to have a pretty tight grip on application developers. It seems every other day that apple update downloads a patch or update for something or other.

My post was mainly in reference to portable hard drives coming and going. Mac's implementation of program and privilege management, access controls and that it is built on BSD UNIX (which has some pretty tight security as standard) means I don't have to worry about viruses when accessing sessions or data on someone else's hard drive.

Maybe the article is right though, perhaps Apple users complacency is its weakness... at the moment I have thoroughly enjoying not having a care in the world about it.

Nath - I'm not sure what your point is - there are no differences between Mac OSX and Windows 7+ in terms of root level security architecture. (WinXP had some real issues on this front though - is that what you are referring to?)

On all other fronts Mac security was hopelessly behind Windows until the last two years or so, but Apple have done a decent job of catching up and most experts now regard them as almost equal.

So if your portable media virus is a shell script attempting to exploit some weakness in the root kernel, then yes, both Mac OSX and Win7 will promptly despatch it. But these sorts of viruses died off years ago - too easily defeated. Most viruses now attempt to authenticate, so the only defence is a targeted anti-virus program.

I'm not belittling the Mac - they're great and I own them. But I also run Windows systems, and they are not inherently any different. (From a cost perspective a Windows machine is hard to beat though).

(Oh, and a "flaw in java software" is what I meant by "java-based", it's still a platform-independent vulnerability).

Hey Manning, thanks for the read. I should probably eat my words as I have barely touched Windows 7, let alone Windows 8. We still have about two dozen XP Dell systems across two facilities that make me want to punch something. Compared to the mac's, they are a nightmare!

Couldn't agree more - I wouldn't have dreamed of using Windows during the XP days. Vista improved the security, but screwed up everything else, so it was still not an option.

Windows 7 got it right however, so now it really comes down to how each OS works. There are some things on the Mac which completely shit me (mainly about file management) and an equal amount of things on Windows which shit me (mainly around window management).
