I generally despise Autotune, but today I found a perfect use for it.

Had a very difficult backing part and the singer couldn't get the pitching. So I got her to record a part that was rhythmically correct and approximately right as far as pitch.

I then autotuned the hell out of it, put it through the cans with greatly reduced instruments and got her to sing along.

She nailed it, and the mix version will still have no autotune.

Nice bit of lateral thinking, and a great way to get a good result with a challenging part!

It can be also really good on bass.
You cant hear the processing on bass as much as other higher frequency instruments,
When bass guitar is surrounded by distorted (harmonically rich) guitars, the bass being really in tune can really help the guitars sit. (player dependent)

i just straight up use it one all my backing vocals, why not.

Its also fast, and sometimes you gotta go there on certain jobs that have budget constraints (recording time).

My first instinct is I just gotta attempt to track them right in the first place, and I also like stuff not being 100% in tune - like orchestra's.
I also do the singing along/double with auto tune too for some clients.
Whatever works.
Its a really great tool used judiciously

i just really happen to like it on oohs and aahs because it makes it feel more synthesized.
as for a pitch tracking tool - that's a really great idea and i'll definitely use that.
Never thought to use it on bass though.
