What's new at your place ?

I used that SASS in your photo for years and really liked it. Tried that KU100 you have there recently and liked it too.
New at my place is an AKG c414c SN:164. Still got all the bits it was born with. Very old and very nice.

What's the capsule like to look at
Scary or amazing ?

Nothing new, but I used a Neumann M147 on outside kick duties recently and really liked it. Never been a big fan of the mic but on kick and some vocals ( dense upper bass heavy ) it works.
Still enjoying the MKH800 on anything.
AKG 747 is my favourite new audience/ambience mic.

this is klaus (rick calls him fritz) in a string session. note the crown is there too, but i didn't dig that mic.

neumann has an amazing stereo image, doesn't collapse to mono very well though.

for trainspotters I used both a ribbon and a condensor on each instrument, just to be safe.

and yes, klaus is wearing sunnies.

I'll get motivated and endeavour to get you a photo of the capsule as its that kind of thread you have started. It had just been given a given a tickle by Andreas Grosser when I grabbed it. I'm in no way technical but I know what I like and I like what I hear with this 414. But, I also like an SM7 or what ever is already plugged in and positioned nearest to what I need to record.

I once meet a live bootleg recording enthusiast who had miniature electret capsules mounted to the front of his glasses, he had tried the side ( dummy head binaural style) but picked up to much of the punters next to him.I hear the recordings were a bit on the nose...now that's stupid.

I bought a vintage 87 recently, had it modded by Ross Giles and
I can report that I love this mic.

Ps whilst not new I was cleaning out my storage area and found a beyer M111 lapel mic which I remember doing a great recording years ago by sitting it in the back of a jmp combo.

There is bugger info about these mics on the net, anyone know much about them.

Ps it's really heavy.

There's a whisper of a new Oliver inspired M49 coming soon. Lucas CS-9. I'll probably order a pair and wait a small rodents lifetime for them to turn up.

Without sending everyone on an eBay/google ferret hunt. There is a sass mic at my work. Should I dust it off and check it out? I seem to remember it not being used ever again after the SF12 arrived.

The only thing I've heard from 'stereo recording guys' that I respect is that they are kinda junky, but I've also heard of one modified to take Sennheiser mics which was supposedly ok. Anything is useable in the right context hey.

I haven't given them a spin yet. $45 each... I paid an extra $10 to get some shells that were used to kill southern USA rednecks in pro-gun attire.

My experience with the crown is limited to just getting 5 of them a few weeks back
And googling .. Then lending them to a few guys to see what's what
Mixed results .. From "your not getting this back" to " here take this back it's wierd"

I put it up with me playing my gibson j200 and singing into that big brauner in the first

The sass sitting on a stand aimed at the guitar three feet back
And the brauner up at my mouth tuned into a tight cardioid to try and keep the guitar out

Frankly the best guitar with vocals sound I have ever captured and so easy i am still smiling
f@#$ all guitar in thr vocal mic and the guitar sond astoundly like the guitar with the room
Sounded like a nice reverb for once with a beautiful short reverb tail on the vocals with worked
With the vocal mic without eating into it .. Perfect .. Well for a ten minute lets just see test

I would pay a lot of money chasing that combination
So it gets my thumbs up !


But they are not loved or misunderstood or used with the wrong mic pres on the
Net .. Why you would ever modify one and cut one up is beyond me
And I have only found one that sold and it was chicken shit cheap

Yeah I kinda do - we're talking the crown boundary mic right? I seem to remember reading something about them making great piano mics...

I got a great / interesting upright piano sound with the Sass mic. Top lid open, mic about 5 feet straight above.

We should go huntin Nath. I bought a couple of those 12 gauge mics a few years ago and like you they haven't been given the spin yet. Apparently they sound killer...

I just used a few Red 12's stuffed inside Old EV 636 mic bodies as vocal effect mics for a show (mixed with a DPA 4060 on the singer). Worked a treat! Did have to add a few bits of foam here and there to deal with wind blasts and ride the mics on the overloads but it added some very cool sound and a bit of much needed gain.
