By popular request, or is that unpopular request?
Overall I agree with Chris T. Things have definitely changed over the last 10-15 years.
I'm continuing on, somewhat unrealistically optimistic I admit.
I have had some time in the sun, so I mostly feel sorry for the 20 year olds, not for myself.
I know a couple of kids in new bands. I wonder how they're ever going to earn a living.
I've worked in some nice studios that have slashed their rates, and they still have plenty of free time to offer.
Go into music, playing or the studio side, because you passionately have to, not because you think it will offer stable income for a 20 year career.

I'm think I'll call my next band The Optimists, though that's probably already taken.

Don't care about the state of any "industry". Naively soldiering on regardless...

In all seriousness, downtown Detroit has many spectacular buildings. It would make an incredible artist/music community, especially given the history of the city. It may eventually happen, but someone has to be first. And I'm not that game to risk my safety.

Downtown Newcastle is really starting to happen here in Australia.
All of these amazing vacant buildings have been turned over to artist collectives, and the town is booming with the arts.
More visionary councils please.

Downtown Newcastle still looks pretty bleak though, and abandoned.
I did notice a couple of funky stores last time i was there, and there are certain gentrified pockets.
No doubt the place has massive potential though. The heritage buildings and numerous beaches.
High speed rail to Sydney would be a complete game changer. Not in my lifetime though by the looks of it.

my vote is you annex the whole newcastle city cdb and make the most mother fucker university in the world for figuring out future energy needs and solutions
like they have in dubai but here ..
get the best people in the whole world down here
make the dumbest town in the world the smartest ..
turn it into a oxford type epicenter for energy needs..

in twenty years time it will be the best idea the world has ever known

and they will probably have the NBN connected by then too

... and following right along on this visionary path the state gov't just sold the port with no interest or repayments for 5 years.... yep, no NBN, no port, no mining tax - things are really looking up (the sh!t) .... at least they still have a footy team.... no wait, doesn't some winkler own that too ..... in the words of Hardy har har - oh dear, oh my....
