Where you listen vs where you mic (via SOS)

The studio bods around here probably know this trick, but it was new to me and quite ingenious I thought. The second poster at this discussion over at SOS

offers this technique for mic'ing instruments without the distraction of spill...

"What I now do is place the mic, put on my AKG K701 and put a delay of approx. 8 seconds on the signal and let the instrumentalist play, or play it myself, so then after a few seconds of delay I can hear exactly how it will record without also hearing the original signal."

Sounds like some kind of magic trick to me

I stick my head where I think the mic should go
And listen to the sound to see if I am right


I guess with guitar amps and kick drums

And I have never been correct on a grand piano
Even once !
