One of my dearest friends wants to record his baby in utero and was asking me about mic's.

I thought my PZM mic would work well, but maybe there is a better choice.

The due date is close and he lives in the country so he doesnt have a lot of access to getting the right mic.

He does have a simple recording setup though and a 57 and 58.

i remember being obsessed wit mics that picked up vibrations...rather than sound waves.
They are used to record reonsnaces in bridges, record insects, etc.
i cant remember what brands i used to look at, but if you look for transducer mics....u might find something.
They have tailored pre's to match the microphones.

There's an app for that (iTunes)
I don't think fetal heart microphones are anything special, you can buy a "prenatal heart listener" for about $25 off Amazon

We use Calrec adhesive (yep... adhesive) ribbon mics (designed for micing piano soundboards) on the goal posts at the MCG as a 'Snicko' type set up. They reject most of the crowd noise but pickup any vibrations caused by contact with the ball.

What about piezo discs? You can pick them up cheap on ebay. Not sure about the freq response of them though.

I have recorded two babies In Utero in the past. Both times was done at the hopsital.

They have a sonic ultrasound machine, your friend will hear this when they go to the hospital for check ups or even when they arrive at the hospital to have the baby.

The first recording i did, they left the ultrasound machine with me, it had an external output which I ran into a portable DAT recorder.

The second one I used didn't have an external out (or at least I didn't have the correct leads and was more caught up in an imminent child birth). BUT the doctor did agree to leave the room for ten minute to allow me to do some recordings.

So, get you friend to check/ask at the doctors and hospital as on both occasions I found the staff (different hospitals) very helpful. Then he can just be prepared with a portable recorder.
