Akai M8 Tube Preamp conversion

Was wondering if anyone could help me on coverting an Akai M8 tube reel to reel recorder to a freestanding Micpre/DI.
Not that tech minded so any simple advice would be much appreciated.
Think they are the same as a roberts770
Has anyone heard one of these as a preamp?
