I am in the market for a rack mount 24 track hard disk recorder, along the lines of the Ta@#$% MX2424, and am looking for any advice on which brand/model to look out for - Ta@#$%, Otari, whatever. I know that there have been quite a few on the market over the years, and advice would be appreciated!

I had an x48 that was a good unit - simple and functional - but it was a bit noisy, similar noise level to a cheaper model PC. I swapped the HD out for an SSD, and (briefly) turned off the CPU fan, but the power supply was the big noise maker......

Also check what I/O is on the Tascams - I think they come standard with TDIF and there are optional analog cards, but those cards seem to cost as much as the unit itself (whether MX24 or x48).

hi mate… would have to think that I'm pretty much the "guy" when it comes to stand alone HD recorders in aust..
i had the very early/ pre release MX2424 and have had plenty since.
good and bad reasons for most of them, but a couple stood above the pack
i currently own 7 joecos (in different flavours) and think they are absolutely by far and away the best in the market (google for my review of the earliest model in audio tech, they have done nothing but improve since then.) I'm in direct contact with joe and he takes advice from users very seriously!

having said that… if you want a cheap solution.
i have 2 MX2424 machines here still (as the back up back up backup system) but now i have so much joeco stuff i can't see them ever being used again

Never heard of the Joeco......... would have suggested the Fostex D series. I've been using a D160 for years without any problems, but that's just me

one has TDIF and the other has analogue

and plenty of traps to watch out for.

I have a couple of Alesis HD24 not getting used. Minimal use, TRS and TosLink in and out.
