Re Clocking options

Hi I have a friend who has just purchased an SSL matrix with two symphony systems and is looking for something as the master clock. He will be using the new mac pro and PT11.
He is looking for something high quality what options would be good for him?

Hi Lee, do you mean two Apogee Symphony IO's? If so, they have an excellent clock built in...fit for any task.

Yes he has two with 2 x 16I/O per box and will go to the computer via the thunder bridge. Will he be ok?

He's got two of the best clocks in the game in those boxes. Just join them together (best to use the IO on port 1 as the master) and thru to the matrix if it has an input...maybe it doesn't have one though.

Thanks guys for the replies. I'm not sure how he wants to configure the desk with the symphonies but he has four analogue 16 i/o cards giving him 64 i/o. I guess he only need an external master clock if he is experiencing trouble. If so what else would one go for? Im not experienced with clocking multiple devices so I don't know any brands.

Apogee clocks should be fine, I've never had an issue clocking anything to them. If there is an issue probably won't be the apogee's. Big Ben maybe if there is an issue, never used one but were highly rated.

Symphony IO clock is all you will need. It's a Big Ben built-in with "enhanced C777 clocking performance". You will be hard pressed to find something better and considering he has two of them...he would be wasting money looking any further.
I use my Symphony IO to clock three other devices...it's easy and built in!
I can't say it anymore...it's all he'll need. :)

Looking at the Matrix manual, it appears if you interface a Symphony I/O to the Matrix, the Matrix will
automatically slave off it.

You can of course then get some esoteric other worldly clock to slave the Symphony off but as suggested
elsewhere here I don't think it's going to give any improvement and could well be a step backward.

Symphony uses DDS based clocking where it's internal clock is digitally synthesised from an internal ref quartz
oscillator. Slaving that DDS system from an external source can give you more jitter than internal in many
cases - it depends.

As a general note - the ultimate way to clock any digital system is from 1 low jitter fixed quartz oscillator but
no pro audio system ever works this way because they all need the ability to slave and 'follow' external clocks.
That's one advantage of asynchronous USB based systems, the clocks at converters can be fixed, but I don't
believe any pro USB I/O boxes work this way.
