I am chasing a pop screen for my U87

I want to try (if they are effective) one of those small rectangular ones, like they released with the u87 anniversary edition, I read you can't buy those separately.

MXL make something and Blue Microphones make one as well


Anyone used either? were they effective and mount okay?

Anyone got one they want to part with?

The reason is, the pop screens I have are taking up too much space when videoing the vocalist.

I have a Blue pop filter - the one on a gooseneck.
Works fine for me.

I haven't noticed any change in sound other than reduction in plosives, but haven't done exhaustive tests.

There is a belief among some engineers that pop filter screens can add sibilance to vocal recordings and recomend the foam type pop filter that where available for the U87 mics. Might be worth doing a few listening tests to check it out.

The reason I asked, was I saw a review on youtube, and there was a difference, with and without, though who knows, the guy might have done a really bad test.... you know... you tube...

But, if someone who inhabits these regions isn't picking it up, its worth a role of the dice.. not sure about its mounting system, (the blue pop screen) not sure the largest diameter mic stand it will clamp on to, as I think its sort of designed for the YETI


Interesting in my research online for this (so take it with an internet grain of salt) the metal ones you see the Beatles using at Abbey Road on u47s and 67s etc, were apparently custom made for EMI.

Also, apparently, the ones that came with the Anniversary Edition U87 are not available separately, though I am sure if the were, they would be prohibitively expensive...

Yes some engineers believe that the metal ones can cause comb filtering. This has not been my experience with the Blue filter - it is a metal grid over a very fine gauze. It does not appear to accentuate sibilance. (hmm...that's a good test phrase). You stirred my curiosity - I will do some more testing this week.
I did do some testing with my stocking style filter and found the attenuation of high frequencies to be negligable. I have found that the foam filters do attenuate highs.
There ARE some other cheaper alternatives to the Neumann ones, but I have no experience with any of these:

I have the U87 Anniversary edition with the metal pop shield Pete. It has a very fine metal gauze (like nylon thickness) in front over the metal mesh. Yes would be great if you could buy them separately, I'd love another one!

They all change the sound a bit
There is no free lunch with popperstoppers

The thing with the metal ones is they are no fun to sing into
You cant put your lips n face right on them
Which i find a HUGE hinderance

Give me a black stocking on hoop any day

The popper on the brauner mics i have is astoundly good
Its metal covered in black stockings .. Best of both worlds

I thought the steedman types where a good idea
But i stopped using them because its just not a nice
Thing for a singer to bump in when their eyes are closed

The neumann one appears to be the same as the blue one
I havent tried the u87 version ..
but did try the generic 47 version that is floating around

Give me a hoop and stocking any day

Studio Projects have a metal pop screen, triangular in shape so not too visually intrusive. When I switched from a standard filter to using the SP unit I didn't notice any perceivable difference..............but I'm not using Nuemanns
