Hmmm.... Let's presume that the claims are correct and that this produces *EXACT* duplication of (say) a Tfunk U47 into a 1073 pre.

How do you now get your audio signal into that digital model? How do you avoid capturing a beautiful digital u47 modelling of the signal from a piece-o-crap physical mic?

In guitar modelling the guitar creates the electric signal, and the pickups are inherent to the instrument. How can this work with microphones?

A symptom of the computer age. Convincing people that the reason that their recordings don't sound good is because they need a vintage mic and pre and that the answer is a pretend vintage mic and pre.

Have another look, you'll notice that it is a complete system - mics, preamp and software. The idea being that the software is calibrated to the known properties of the (presumably very flat) hardware.

Would it work? I have a free plugin that does a remarkably good job of mimicking the subtleties of certain hardware (Colortone)... it's not going to make a fairchild or a V76 redundant, but it pushes it nicely in the right direction. So there's no reason why a system like this can't give great results.

Would I buy it? No. "Listen to this vocal... it's a virtual U47 into a virtual 1073 into a virtual 660 - that's $50 grand worth of awesome virtual awesomeness right there!" OK it will probably be a very successful product, but I don't know who it's for. I'd love a 251... but if i can't have one, I use something else. If you care about the tone THAT much, then are you going to be satisfied by something like this? I don't know.

The marketing just gets up my goat... and my goat don't like it....

Maybe thats a laconic aussie thing... rather than sisss boooom baaaaah

If he didn't use words like "exact" ...... and marketed it as not "exactly" copying things like a famous "s-57" microphone.... etc... but then it really wouldn't be Slate.

His Trigger thing works great at what it does....

I own his VCC and VTM and I don't use em, plenty do though... he got my money ... so he won 8)

cheers

To get something "exactly" like a U47 you're supposed to replace every mic in your locker with Steven Slate? I'll laugh when there's a studio with nothing but a Raven and this stupid piece of software. I expect this to fade out within the next year.

[and yes I am new here - this exact thing is why I'm going to turn here instead of Gearslutz now haha]

I'm going against the grain here, I have only 1 slate product but I like the man and I like his passion.

His marketing maybe a tad over the top but what marketing isn't in some way.

The way I see it, he is somewhat of a revolutionary and the reasons I think that are these..

The 47's are what 60 odd years old, the VF14 tubes haven't been made since the early 60's at some point they are simply going to be museum pieces, same as 1073's etc etc. But also at some point (if you understand moore's law) computing power is going to be so great and will have the power to model such mic's and pre's 99% if not 100%

It is the future, just as DAW's were.. I remember seeing someone at rich in the early 90's using pro tools and I remembering saying I could never make music that way.. Lol.

With DSD and god knows what's around the corner it is the future, simply for no other reason as nothing lasts forever.

None of us has heard it yet, but if it gets to 90% that's a great achievement in my book, and I'd seriously consider buying it as I don't have 15K plus to buy the real deal.

I'm going to dig the future.

microphones are a lot like camera lenses I reckon.

no matter how many megapixels your camera is, no matter how many features it has and how much it cost, it's only gonna be as good as the lens you stick in front of it.

and no amount of photoshopping is gonna make that sh!t photo good enough for a national geographic spread (if that's what you're going for).

imagine the hilarity that would ensue amongst professional photographers if someone came out and said they could 'model' lenses, and all you needed was one lens for everything (wide/telephoto/tilt shift/prime etc) and that the 'software' would sort everything out after?

Come on. Nothing against Mr Slate, but the guy is an assclown looking to make money off a bunch of clueless noob hacks using gearslut buzzwords like U47, modelling and 'the future'.

remember the focusrite liquid channel? that thing was apparently 'the answer' for everything. now any self-respecting engineer would be embarrassed to have that thing in his or her rack.

;-)

That is essentially almost all of the people involved in some sort of sales, manufacturing, or marketing in the music world because 'clueless noob hacks' are the only ones with money in this industry. Sad isn't it?

I have bought this software/mic and am know recording all drum sessions one drum at a time. Takes a while, but i can have EXACTLY the same sound as using a vintage 47 on every drum and cymbal, which isn't really a great sound anyway, but it is the way of the future.

I know everything I need to know 'cause Steven told me so"

Although, the noise gate on trigger 2 is @(*$&%$ amazing.

........yes but there are enough engineers now with zero self respect who collectively will go a long way to float this type of thing. For an extreme end of the scale example, last week I went into the local Apple store to get a new iPhone for my son and saw a stereo mic interface for iPhones. While was checking the thing out, a sales rep approached and during the initial discussion he said he was an audio engineer too. So i asked him a basic question...does it have phantom power? His elaborate answer revealed he didn't have a clue what phantom power was. So I accepted his answer, hiding the fun I was having, and to further my entertainment, asked him if it could be configured for M/S recording. He thought seriously for a nanosecond and replied .....no it won't record mono as it's a stereo mic.

Chris, that's really funny. Wish you'd had a hidden camera.
