With all the phaffing about I have recently done
"should I get hd native or
should I get hdx how can i not do either
what are the advantages of either ..?
do you need hdx
can i survive with just the native card .."

In the wash-up I bought both the big bastard hdx for the studio and hd native card for home reused a bunch of blue hd 192 converters and got one new grey converter interface to keep Avid satisfied that they skinned me for as much as they could get.

Now here is the thing that was NEVER in the equation ...HEAT !
it only works on HDX as an system plugin ... its tops
it makes everything sound good .
I haven't used it on a big summing mixer session yet which is what it is designed for i think

but just as a plug in on stereo mixes when i am mastering .. it sounds like nothing I have
or nothing can imagine describing cept "good " ..it sounds good .

nowhere on the world wide waste of time did i notice anybody using heat as one of the outstanding bonuses for running hdx and the added expense of HDX ... so it was a neat little surprise .
I would pay thousands for heat to be locked up in an magic external hardware unit .

Does it sound like tape? .. no not really , does it sound distorted ?.. no not at all
it Just sounds better , better image better clarity better focus .


All that from a guy that hates saying anything nice about Avid
they are either evil or evil geniuses I can never tell .

I love heat. It was designed by Dave Hill, which has made me wonder how similar it may be to the crane song HEDD or his Phoenix plugin.

I like to start with it on at the beginning of a mix, so I know where I'm going but have been forgetful and switched it on half way through. Nice surprise.. .. happy ending..
I don't use it for everything... but... when drums and bass are on a song it gets switched in..I sometimes switch it off on the vocal and guitar tracks because of harder/harsher sounding elements (mainly due to me pushing the tone control a little I think).
A magic thicknesser with tone control..somehow feels like it broadens, glues, thickens and adds a bit of extra tone.

Obviously it wasn't marketed well enough.....

I've just installed it on our main PT system
but havnt done a mix through it yet
as per convos here - I've only heard great things about it - so looking forward to it!

somebody told me abstractly ( so don't trust this) that heat and phoenix were the same deal ..?

I read all the blurb about Heat when it was released .... and dismissed it as another avid pitch - so it's interesting to read your praise of it Rick - and even more interesting to hear about your upgrades. I look forward to hearing more about both - esp. your thoughts on Native

Check it out if you get a chance. I grabbed my off ebay.com for just over $100 is memory serves me right.
I wouldn't pay the price Avid is asking for it.

What I love about it is its simplicity. There are probably other plugins out there that could do something similar, but they way it integrates into the protools mixer is terrific... Just two knobs and it can alter the way your mix sounds quite a bit!
