Hi All,
I'm on the look out for a new high quality 24 channel 48volt phantom power supply.
It seems the market mainly has mic splitters with gain and transformers and a bunch of stuff I don't want.
Its to be used to power Orchestral mics that need to be shared between two different recording control rooms,
that may and may not be operating simultaneously, hence the need for external 48volt supply.
Mics will be phantom powered and then go to a splitter system and then to respective control rooms for mic pre attenuation.
Any ideas out there?

Tell me about the" splitter system " is it fully transformer isolated on both splits?

Hi Rob,
The mic splitter is a passive type, built into the Opera house concert hall main patch panel.
One side is direct the other has a transformer on it.
Not sure what kind of transformer, as it's built into the miniature Lemo K Connector patch bay.
It is just patch bay connections there are no switches for ground lift or pad.

So then.... can the directly connected console supply phantom?

Yes that would normally be the case.
But the console on the direct side may not always be powered up.
The scenario is, two different recording studios balancing/recording rehearsals and performances with one team doing radio broadcast and the other web stream and recording multitrack.
Sometimes we will both be balancing/recording at the same time, and sometimes due to scheduling it will be one team working on their own.
Being "classical" recording people get picky and if they start rehearsals for the project on the direct side of the split
they will want to stay on that side for the remainder of the project.
I hope this makes sense.

If they are fussy then the console on the direct side if not powered up will potentially mess with quality of the mic signal. So that has to be solved first. Unless you won't use the splitter in this situation. And then does the remaining console not have phantom?

having a console "hanging" off the direct but not powered up, has the potential to "change" as much as anything else.

sounds to me you need to think about the likelihood of situations here an rethink a little?
if you want the separate phantom like you are thinking - then BOTH consoles should be behind trannies so that what either is doing won't change things

i get the fussy types in my broadcast world too…

yep - i've had this happen to me (having something switched off hanging over an input affecting the signal).

i reckon you'd be better off with a 24-way EDAC connector or even dsub patch bay, so if you need to change consoles (and keep mics patched) you just swap a connector somewhere in the middle.

Rob the console on the direct side if not being used would not be connected to the split. Phantom would be provided by the new 48v supply upstream of the split so the isolated side would still work and vice versa.

is there room in the splitter to put switches? if you want each point able to have phantom on or off

otherwise you are needing a whole extra box with XLR in and out

No space in the patch bay it would have to be a separate unit.
