Who can tune control rooms/Bob Hodas style???

Postby Clay » Sat Aug 09, 2014 5:42 pm

Hey guys,
Im wondering if theres anyone in Australia that can tune a control rooms acoustics,
or if we have to go to the lengths of flying Bob Hodas (Or someone as good) out to do it?

Have any of you guys had your control rooms tuned by a professional?

Cheers

David Gilfillan is highly recommended

He sorted out - among other things - tricky and ongoing room problems at Sony

At Sony they had problems with the room: they changed the dimensions and it caused big problems with the monitors. If you want details, ask Ross Ahern, he was there for 20 years and witnessed the issues and the eventual fix

When I lived in Sydney I ran my own freelance acoustic consultancy business that specialised in treating control rooms.

It isn't a difficult task, but it is a specialist task and perhaps the best demonstration the axiom "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

If I was to hire an acoustician to treat my control room (if I had one) I would be calling David Spargo at Praxis Acoustics. I guess that makes him an acoustician's acoustician.

You will also need SPACE in the room to be able to implement required treatment, especially at lower frequencies.
If your room is small, ceilings low, every inch of the space important to be able to fit your gear in etc, it might be very hard to treat everything that needs treatment.
It's quite simple to determine what needs treatment, but there are a few calcs and some skill required to execute it.
Hope you achieve the best results possible :-bd
