Speaker recommendations to $5k

Postby Text_Edifice » Mon Sep 15, 2014 6:25 pm

Hi all,

need to upgrade our main speakers. We have $5k. Would prefer powered but performance / on budget is a bigger concern.

Love to hear your thoughts.

I have the opals, they're are pretty good but require a decent size room to get the full results out of them.

+1
Opals are really great - they are also amazing for electronic music: they get down there without a sub.
And Rode have excellent/fast customer support if you need it.

I got a pair of Rokit 10-3s (3 way) and a pair of Rokit 12s subs for around $3K and they're surprisingly good for the $s - worth a listen.

fwiw I originally got the KRKs to be studio monitors (as I had already some v nice ctrl room monitors) but found that my mixes were translating better to the real world using the KRKs so they swapped roles.

Hi, you could do what I did. Buy a pair of these http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/downloa ... 8H_III.pdf
and build these to house them http://www.manualslib.com/manual/365692 ... -Plan.html
After run in, these are wonderful monitors. All up cost was around $4k. Take $1k off that if you can build the cabs yourself.
If you have a big enough room, you will not find a better, deeper, more accurate reproduction at any sane price.
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul,

if I was doing this just for myself that looks really interesting. But it's for work and we're in an unusual position of having more cash than I have time right now.

Hi Dave, yeah, it's not an off the shelf solution, but if you had time and space, it's a damn good one!
I think there is actually someone in Sydney now making complete speakers with these components, maybe they have some ready to go! Can't find them at the mo....
