Portable preamp also for studio use.

I find I am doing more and more recordings out on location. For example next week I have been asked to go to the last Gearbox Manufacturing plant in Australia before it closes down next month (due to the closing down of the auto manufacturing industry here) and to record the space.

Anyway, I am thinking about buying one or two channels of nice portable preamps, like Sound Devices or something similar but as I only do that sort of thing rarely, I want those preamps to be useful in the studio as well.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Recommendations?

Vic

Hi Vic,

I don't have any stand alone portable preamps however I do use my Nagra VI as extra channels in the studio often. Great unit I have no problems with the quality of the pres in it. I think the Nagra EMP is the same or similar preamps.

DAV BG-1 would be a good choice. Provided you have power on location and aren't needing something buss powered like the Duet. Which is a good choice for that sort of situation.

Didn't the Apogee Mini-Me have decent preamps and a battery option?

I can thoroughly recommend the absolute quality (both build and sound) of my Sound Devices 302 mixer and my Grace Lunatec - both either mains or battery power.

The Grace - besides being beautifully built - has a built-in AD up to 192k plus ADSR, and both units can be used as mic amps, line amps or MS config.

I ended up going for the Apogee Duet at this stage as it solved some other things that I have coming up as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have some of them on my list for future things.

Apogee arrived today.

Thanks all.
