Albini is full of contradictions. I've been back and forth with him personally on a forum before.
One which mystifies me is if the age of IP ownership is over, and if free sharing of music is so much better than selling recordings, why is the latest Shellac album available for purchase only, and why doesn't his label page offer free downloads or at least free streaming of the record?
You'd think he would just put all his work out there, Creative Commons and all that.
There is sense in the article, but also very particular opinion, based on his own wants and needs. And when you push him on that aspect, he openly admits his version of the industry works for him and he doesn't care if it doesn't work for other artists.
Spoke to a friend (professional) in London on Monday who says people are leaving the industry in large numbers as they realise there is no income from streaming.
