They are really nice.
I'm after one to fill the vacant space in my lunchbox also.
I did a shottout between the 512 and the MA5.
Both were great, but I wanted to API's first..
Definately a great mic pre in 500 series format..

I just thought they were pretty average in sound, I referred to them as sounding like cardboard once and upset a whole bunch of yanks on GS for referring to thier sound as a "paper product". I won't do that again.

Anyway I just don't think they have the mojo people say they do. I way prefered the JLM NV500's.

I don't know what was so wrong with using the term "cardboard". Some of these vintage or modern preamps do have a wooden or cardboard sound to them. I think "cardboard" could be seen as a compliment if it's the type of sound you are after. I think the R84 with a GR has a cardboard texture about it.

It was a shame that no one stuck up for you from Australia, when I read it.

Ahhh it's all good, upsetting yanks is a hobby of mine. :) They were all saying it sounded like a Neve and it really really does'nt, not even close. The gear pimps will always say otherwise though.

But yeah I agree a cardboard type quality is what I hear in a lot of gear, especially cheaper gear, but the JLM's seem to be a fair bit better to my ears.

Some may really like the ma5, there's nothing wrong with that either. They are quite usable, I just coud'nt get into them.

The yanks do get very touchy about thier gear though, hang out on GS too long and it can rub off. :)

Well I'll look forward to finding out what a 'cardboard' sound is like. Im thinking that my API's are washy sounding on metal guitars, I've owned the JLM 99v and TG before, and when I heard the NV, found it to be a bit scooped for my tastes to be useful in the loud guitar genres that I'm dealing with - would be nice on male vocals and some acoustics though.

Maybe I should have kept that TG... grrrr.

Anyways - who's gonna sell me their MA5!!???!

Dave,

You've gotta try a Chandler TG2 for guitars.

A mate has one and i recently got to spend some time with one.It is the best electric guitar pre i have ever heard.Head to head with the 1073's, and the TG2 took the cake.

Interesting - what genre/styles?
I'm loving my API's for guitars (electric & acoustic)
I've heard the Chandler stuff is good with guitars though too..

The TG2 was used on a number of styles that week.Ranging from an "Oasis" type sound to a more open sound like "Goo Goo Dolls" to a heavier track,kind of like Nickleback overdriven heavy.It also was no slouch on a clean/chorus sounding part tracked thru a Roland JC-120.

I really enjoyed the way in which it preserved and enhanced the overtones and harmonics in comparison to the Neves.

Everyones got different tastes.I could happily live with this as my only electric guitar pre if need be.

Oh, its good to hear other opinions Mike.
I actually A/B's the MA5 and the 512 - I was going to buy either one or the other and liked both (heard the MA5 at a listening session at nIC's place in Jan)
I spent most of the good part of a saturday when I was up at Gold Cost Mix (Daniel from Legacy Audio) listening to both pres using a M49 and C24
Different horses for different courses..
I'd love to try a Chandler pre though too..

Damn, a bit pricey for my budget at the moment - shame its not in 500 series..
I doubt the Germanium 500 would sound as good or the same as the TG2..
Anyone using the Germ 500 at all????

I have heard lots of good things about the JLM TG5000. I think Aearth had one, it that right Nick?

From memory i dont think JLM's TG 500 is a recreation of Abbey Roads TG12428 used in their consoles.I do believe Chandler's TG2 is.

I'm interested in the Chandler Germanium 500..
How it compares with the TG2.. Similar, dissimilar?
Joe says on his site its more based on early NEVE, BBC, EMI gear..

I use my Chandler TG2 for lead vocals at times and it rocks - Also kik drum is amazing through it - And bass gtr too!
I need to try it on guitars now - I'm stuck on Quadeights and my Electrdyne 711's for guitar
The Germaniums are really similar - but the passive EQ on the TG is real plus.

Hey Dave, when you are at BJB my TG2 will be with me at The Grove Studios - where I am doing the Silverchair album.
By the way, I have been recording Daniels vocal through a U67 into the TG2 + retro Gates - Its killer!
I chose the TG2 over the Neves and Telefunkin pre's.

Hey Chris - Silver-who? Never heard of them. Jokes, thats great man, can't wait to hear your work on their stuff! Im a fan of the sound of the Scares album you did, and DJ's music.

Im doing drums for an album at BJB with Simon for a band called Gay Paris, they are a must see, definitely my years highlight... No way near as prestigious as Silverchair, but definitely better name.

Ill hit up the Mixmasters re: TG2

At the listening day @ Aearths studio in Jan, the standout on the day was the 512C and a Great River mic pre (MP-2NV).
The JLM was nice but I liked the 2 above better..
