I don't think its a compressor but more a fancy way to say micpreamp .....and I wouldn't think it would be an investment either. Cool box however.

I'm not the Chris you should be hearing from but I reckon it sounds crap and is a useless bit of kit....... only 15 db of gain........bloody useless if you ask me....... i'm sure the other chris will say the same.

that would be a no - they are nothing like the tube limiters
its a 4chn ob discrete solid state mic pre made for the abc australia
there are heaps of other types all with the same lineup and specs made for the abc including
EMI
RCA
AWA
SEDCO
they are all high quality but undervalued nowadays and need some help to get them into the new century without hassles
Rob squire does work on these line of beasties as well as the grandaddy tube stuff
and HE is on this forum as well :)

These where based on a similar RCA box and used for outside broadcast, early ones have germanium transistors. I have one of the early ones and it has a lot of gain but gets a bit noisy. Gets nice and fury when over driven a bit. I've used them for snare, bass or drum room mics for the effect. This eBay one looks a bit of a newer version so may not be germanium........but when all's said and done they're bloody useless really.... OK?

okay okay! i'll talk to oldmate about the neve pre's. as for the awa i really need to stop getting distracted by three letter manufacturers. especially when they are olllld. or new for that matter. and on ebay. think i'll just stick to here for quality gear. now who has a behrenger di for sale, i need to get some nice noisy signal for my bass.

No no mate....What your doing is great. Its how you learn about all this stuff. It teaches you about old, odd equipment and occasionally you can score big when everyone else misses it. I've grabbed a heap of cool old junk this way. I find it doesn't matter how much equipment you reaserch, there is always something you've never heard of just around the corner. Enjoy the hunt.

Yes, handy that. I've read they have kept records on the specs of each driver so if one blows then they can provide a matched replacement. Luckily, this pair is in good condition.

whoa chris, those duntechs are insane looking bits of kit. when i saw the price new i thought, these guys are doing way to good for this current economic climate. at least i know what to shock the missus with when we go stereo hunting/upgrading in a few years. one thing i did want to get clarified though regarding high end spec speakers/monitors s that at three letter word i was told that a speaker needs to be able to have a minimm spl spec of 94dB@1W to truly get an accurate image, i noticed with all the duntech ones they are only around 90dB delivery. now obviously if these speakers are truly what they claim to be then what i was told may or may not be untrue. anyone care to clarify this for me?

I believe all speakers are a compromise between sound quality and volume, think the more you have of one, the less you have of the other.

This is obviously a gross generalisation but seems pretty accurate in my limited experience.

That forklift might have come in handy last week.... unloading a 175 pound CRT studio monitor in a crate. The Fedex guy says to me, "do you have a forklift?" I just looked at him and said: "No mate, we just make TV shows here".

btw... a pair of Duntech's went on ebay a while back for about $8k. They belonged to Don Bartley I think.

neh i didnt get it, i bid on it but my max bid was 300, i was reluctant to put anymore down as i didnt want to end up with another anchor. is that price cheap Chris or way ott?

I did win the neve pre though, very excited, my first neve pre. i'm dying to track some acoustic guitar through my new ribbon and pre. when i saw i got it i was pretty amped up, i've scored some sweet deals in the last week on gear.

Waaaaay over, in my opinion.... an example of internet hysteria..... $100 max and i would only ever pay around $50...... i mean they are a remote broadcast unit with unfriendly signal to noise ratio, 4 in one out, plus a "telephone input" so to get four mic pre's they need to be modded for separate outputs for each preamp and that takes money. Like i said they are a great pre for the effect of their sound including when over driven but they would need money spent on them ie time by a knowledgeable tech to make em worthwhile. Now i'm talking from using my own unit only so others might find them different as there were many revisions of the basic design idea like later ones using silicone transistors not germanium etc.
Well done on the Neve though, a much more versatile and useful bit of kit for the same price!
