"# 1952 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop (Est. $14,000 - $16,000) No serial number, Trapeze tailpiece, tuners have been changed to Grover’s, pat. Pending with original case. This is one of the very first Les Paul guitars produced. The back of the headstock is hand signed, “Les Paul.” The guitar is pictured on page 238 of Paul’s autobiography Les Paul In His Own Words. "

Hmmmmm, I'm a bit skeptical about a pre-production Les Paul prototype going for only $16K. I'll note that the SG belonging to his wife Mary just went for $110K.

Interesting that the second instrument listed is a Fender, and signed by Leo personally, maybe they really were friends after all.

Forget about the estimates, they're usually meaningless.

At Eric Clapton's "Crossroads" auction a few years ago, Christie's estimated Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Lenny" strat at "$15,000-$20,000"... it sold for $623,000. Many, many items were estimated in the $2000-$4000 range but ended up selling in the $20,000-$40,000 range (just looking through the Christie's catalog now... so glad I bought it, it's fantastic).

As for "Blackie"... well they didn't even bother with an estimate (sold for $959,500).
