I have a pair of KRK 6000 (older style KRK's). Not quite in your budget...but close. You'd just need an amp to run them.

Ideally looking for powered monitors and they are a little more than I wanted to pay. I'll have a think about it though.

Well I just bought some original Fostex PM1s ... you can all let me know what an idiot I am :) I am pretty clueless but have musicians ears, whatever that means. I have plugged them in and they seem task-worthy for now.
