Hey Chris,

What's the down low on these comps?
Was keen to buy as assumed they would be the kind of comp that can mangle and smash?!?

Or is it pretty transparent?

I'm not Chris, but the one i owned, about 10 years ago, was more on the colored, mellow side. It could grab, but when it grabbed it was still mellow and soft sounding (if that makes sense)... That's my memory of it... For the price, it's a fantastic comp.

i was actually going to post something about this, then thought the for sale forum wasnt the right place...
i had one for a while.
i didnt "get" it
mellow, soft, and grabby like senad says
but i sometimes always found it too soft, or too grabby.

good comp for the price for sure
and certainly had its uses
but didnt end up a go to for me.

Hey, thanks!

Sounds like it definitely has its place.
theres hardly any reviews on these at the moment and I'm wondering what that 'sound' is.

I imagine a good vocal or guitar comp? I would prefer if it could do the whole room mic thing.

May just get in the market for an 1178 or something similar.

Well I never ever used it for grabby type stuff, there are so many other comps that do that stuff real well.
To me most compressors do really different things
The Joe meek is handy when I wanted to contain a lumpy stereo source - like keyboards, backing vocals, some orchestral stuff, also certain percussive content
- but never drums/ bass/ guitars / or main vocal - only because I have other outboard that are my faves for these tasks.
It works - it compresses.
All different tools

My experience with these things mirrors Gareth's almost exactly. I never was able to find a source I loved it on, but I never hated it either.

Real bland but not in a nice, neutral way. Which doesn't make sense, but there you go.

I was pretty surprised by how much interest there seemed to be when I saw this thread. heh

To each their own!

my experience of this compressor was that it was grabby and a bit sh!t. so i sold mine and then down the track wished I hadn't.

i guess it's nice to have all sorts of compressors - some transparent, some good for vocals, some effect-y, some crushing and thin.

from what i can remember the grabby thing was great for synths and BV's that you want to be super back, and not great for much else.

given that some people spend $400 on a plugin, I reckon it was a bargain ;-)
