I would hire your gear but people are not willing to pay the extra money when its only a home studio.

There are very well set up studios with a good engineer charging $400 a day. In real terms the client is getting the studio for free and only paying the engineer for his time...and $50/hour is not a great wage!

I can understand them not wanting to pay any extra. They come here because they want to pay as little as possible and they are willing to put up with the limitations of a home studio. I only really do demos and little crappy jobs out of here. It would be nice to do better work but hey, money is money and I have chosen to do this for a living (what was I thinking. Crazy idiot).

I sure as hell don't bring clients with any money here. Like you said, studios with a nice collection of gear are charging so little for hire. Why wouldn't I hire a bigger place to record. Edit in the home studio to save a few bucks then back to the big studio for the mix. I may not end up with as much money in the hand at the end of the day but the product is so much better.

Jason. I hope you didn't think i was having a go at you & the "home studio". Definitely not. More a comment on the state of the industry. Bob Clearmountain has had a "home studio for years, so has Neil Young and many others. Any one with some gear, the know how (the essential ingredient) and the ability to network and attract clients can make a go of it. But there is definitely an over supply of studios in the market.
Given the abundance of musicians with their own recording set up and them hopefully getting better at recording with experience, i would think that a hire business with the good gear options would or should do ok. Anyone has to sell i (e promote) their business though and there are many ways to do this. And looking through Dominic's gear list he's got a great collection of the tools of the trade. Krikey, there is nothing extra need to do great recordings. If he was in Melbourne his gear would be an option for me to hire for some of the live recordings i do.

I have to agree with Chris about location but surely there must be some bands in Qld that want to hear a good result. Don't they ask themselves "there's something not right with the mix". Sure it will sound ok but using the good gear will make it sound pro.
Dominic you need to do a ring-around and spam the studios, because your gear is what they want or should I say what they need. My gear rarely goes out to home studios (sought of) these days, mainly go out to bands that want to do their recording at a location where they can get a vibe eq. farm house, beach location.
I think it is a matter of bands, production houses and studios not knowing that you offer great gear.

Hey Chris H. I no way did I think you were having a go. Its all good ;-)

I would love to build a larger home studio in the back yard. Get some height in the roof and 2 nice size rooms. But that takes money so I will have to stay were I am for the moment. But that is the plan as soon as the funds are available. Hopefully then I can get some better jobs.

I think the sounds I am pulling out of the studio at the moment are pretty good but it will never sound as good as a studio full of nice gear.

I have hire Dom's rack of 8 Neve pres for a live recording once before. They sounded fantastic!

Thats why ive given up this caper.......$15 an hour.Now i deliver groceries and get twice as much.

I am adding a pair of Neumann 47Fet's to the list amongst other gear shortly, some more Neve's etc, I'll post a new list soon.

Having done some work with Dom now I can say he is fantastic to work with, fast and reliable. If you need a killer sound for your next project this is the man to go to. Such great gear
