Good luck finding one!

I used to have one many years ago, but sold it in a fit of madness/stupidity.

Whats funny is that I listed it in the trading post (No ebay then) and listed it as a cash sale, with the potential to trade for a TR-808 or TR-909 or TB-303.

Some clown actually felt obliged to call me up and leave a message on my answer phone abusing me saying that "I didn't have S#@t to trade"
I had a good laugh at just visualising some gear nerd getting all upset because I had the audacity to even think that a classic vocoder is worth a similar amount to a drum machine etc.. and then following that through with a call to me.. lol

While I don't have the roland to compare it too, the MAM vocoder is a kick arse vocoder which I certainly rate above all the other vocoders I've tried.

Haha, how wrong Mr Self-Righteous Gear Nerd was. Would have been gold to use that answering machine message as a sample.

There's a few on eBay in Japan and the US at the moment, but the Japanese are really pushing the prices up on vintage gear so they aren't too affordable, especially once coupled with the shipping rates and exorbitant paypal fees. That's why I'm trying to find one a bit more local, I'm willing to pay a fair price but avoiding all those extra fees would be nice.

Will read up on the MAM vocoder you recommend, thanks very much for the suggestion! Have tried a few plug-in vocoders including the new one on Ableton 8 Suite and found them all to be... just not quite there. Very software-ish (unsurprisingly).

I wouldn't pay too much for an SVC-350.

I don't think they're all that.

my music partner ed has one, and they do a cool thing, but even with the ensemble effect turned off, they're very mushy. And you really have to work at them to make them sound OK.

Would recommend the SVC-350 for the paddy background string sound vocoder stuff, rather than a lead vocoder.

I really like the vocoder module in the nord modular. if you use a decent external synth with it, it's great.

The vocoder modules in the doepfer range are pretty cool, too.

More than what I payed for mine tho..

Pity MAM have folded, I did like pretty much all of their products.. very German sounding.

Cool! How did you find that? I did a search in both eBay Australia and eBay US and didn't come up with one. I like the sound of it from what I've read so far, do you have a link to any of your recordings featuring yours? Would love to hear.

Also I checked out the Doepfer A-129 vocoder module but looks like I'd need a BUNCH of other modules to make it usable, which would get pretty pricey. Looking for something a bit more plug and play, along the lines of the VF-11 me thinks. Also partial to analogue warmth which wouldn't be provided by the Nord Modular from what I've read thus far.

Like I said, the MAM wins my vocoder vote.

It's the same one as used on the BeastyBoys track "Intergalactic" using it's internal oscillator..
It's punchy as f@#k sounding, but can do all that ELO style vocoding as well..

It's got a few cool features, like you can use it as a frequency dependent distortion & it also has a siblance input, so if you do a "Ssss" sound it will play that input instead of the internal white noise... very handy.

Nice! Thanks for that. I really like 'Miss em' and 'Kim's Wilde'. Good feel to them.

'Intergalactic' is a great reference-point for me, love Beastie Boys (except their last album). Will go have another listen now.

How long ago did you buy your MAM, and do you think that one on eBay is too overpriced?

I bought mine from Sound devices about 7 years ago for $500.

Then again, the original prices was $1100... then it dropped a few times.. then i bought it.

FWIW I had a SVC 350 25 years ago..and I wasn't that impressed..the one in the VP330 was Ok.

I use the Nord one as someone mentioned...although its bben a while !

Thanks for your input, will have to give the Nord a try if I can find someone with one. You're on the Sunny Coast I see - I dream of building a studio in the hinterlands some day. My mum has some nice land up in Cooran, but she's moving unfortunately. Anyway, you have an AMAZING collection of synths mate. Drooling here.
