Hey guys, the power adapter/transformer for my Samson C-Control died this morning and after trawling the web and visiting Dick Smith and Jaycar it seems I'm outta luck.

Have been using the Samson supplied 18VAC 1A adapter ( 120VAC ) but am happy to purchase either another US style OR local 240V version.

Closest thing I could find today was at Jaycar which was 17V.

Does anyone have a spare they can sell me? Or maybe point me in the right direction.
I can buy online from OS but I really need this asap.

i'd be giving the 17Vac from Jaycar a shot
any AC plug pack that has a voltage of "X" stamped on it is only a nominal voltage, it will be higher with no load and less with a heavy load. Your Sampson will be converting the incoming "18Vac" power to internally regulated DC supplies and if the design is any good will have enough "headroom" to cope with a 17Vac supply.

Well, it did for most of Sunday until my pc DIED!!! ARRRRGGHHHHH.

I need another recomendation.

2 weeks ago I was downloading some mixes onto my studio pc and picked up a virus. Managed to find someone local who could "fix" it for me in a hurry - 3 days and $400 later I get it back and find that all they did was reformat and I had to reinsatll all my programs. Worked fine until Sunday pm...in the middle of tracking up pops a DAE error message, PT shuts down, I get a blue screen and now when I boot up I only get as far as the second black screen showing driver lists etc.

I had Anthony at Calibrations set this pc upfor me 2 1/2 years ago and it's never skipped a beat. I've been trying to contact him since Sunday but I keep getting an answering machine - I really need to get my pc sorted as I do have some work coming up so it's kinda urgent.

Can any of you TR'ers recommend someone who does audio pc setups?
Please help.....

ps, I know NOTHING about computers so DIY is not really an option. Thanks guys

I know A LOT of very successful musicians who can't read or write music, why do I need to know how to build a pc in order to record music on one? One virus in 3 years...not exactly a regular occurence - just an inconvenient pain.

I must say that I also use a PC and keep my AV software up to date and have not had a virus in many yrs...
I think it depends on where you visit these days on the world wide waste of space.... the dodgier the site, the more chance of infection..
like a few other situations as well.. ;-}

My advice (fwiw)...

Don't use your music computer for ANY net activities..whether Mac or PC.
(and that's after 26 years of using computers and music together)

Use a cheap computer for anything to do with the net.

NYMo, the decision to go online with the studio pc to download that days mixes from my employers site was made out of sheer laziness ( I didn't feel like downloading to my "net pc" and then transfer across )....and now I've paid the price. A lesson learned.

Tim, I rarely visit "dodgy" sites ( usually when I'm looking for DIY guitar pedals is when I end up on them ) and my employer has made me a more than generous offer as compensation ( because that's his nature and he feels partly responsible ) but I've declined it as it was MY decison after all. Unfortunately there were a couple of other people who visited his site that night that also copped it although not as badly as I seemed to.

Oh, I wasn't saying you were visiting dodgy sites Brett - more that there is a lot of hidden viral loading in websites these days.
Our bass player is the IT guy for the police commissioner and he said there is just so much stuff out there that is designed to harm your computer (whether PC or Mac!)

It seems to me, that person is pretty damn dishonest. I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't swapped dodgy parts into your computer while they were at it. If you can get it to the guy who sold it to you and just get him to check the original parts you bought are still in the computer as shown on your purchase receipt, that'd be a good start.

It's also possible that your computer does have all its original parts and whatever virus you have has setup an autorun on a non-system drive, and your new windows install is getting hit again when it accesses the drive...

Hey Tim, I know you weren't insinuating anything and sorry if I came over a bit funky......Dales unintentional pc vs mac thing caught me on a particularly frustrating day, all I wanted to know was what I could do to fix my pc.

Just wanted to say that i haven't had virus protection installed on any of my machines for about 3 years and its only been an issue ONCE. As Tim said, if you are careful of the websites you visit and use a secure browser, you dont need to worry so much.

Anyway, this discussion is all over the web, so i wont go on any more.

PC's are better :P
