Gosh, I reckon my current gear budget of a little of $1k would be about on the money, wouldn't it

if this is seriously considering being sold, I'd love to know about it.

presume we are talking the grandson of ...its worth about 4-5 k as a desk and about 8-10k as raw modules

it should be worth about 30k as a desk and nothing as modules
there is one at my place .. ( not for sale ) whats to modd ?

Hey Rick what ever happened to the 32 channel 701 Memphis you had as your latest doorstop?

This desk used 2 b mine ,i lost it in a diviorce settlement , now i have the opportunity to buy it back

Wow, interesting. A guy on GS was talking about going through a divorce settlement at the moment and losing a fair chunk of gear from his home studio as a result. Man that's just wrooooong on so many levels.

business and personal need to be seperate, not that I've had any problems there. Sorry to hear though, been through divorce and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

ok in my foyer right now is a 32 channel 701 audtronics granson and the neotec just came in !
they are both going out so if you ever wanted a big console at a little price let the games begin
the neotec is gonna be a trm auction the audotronics will be a transaction with the owner ( not me )
ill bring my camera in tommorrow

I've just realised this is a four year old thread! I believe the 32 channel Auditronics Rick is referring to wound up in my hands.

Anyway, for web-searchers reference, I've learnt a bit about Auditronics since I bought it - I've been slowing compiling a history of the company, and I've been in email contact with a couple of the old engineers.

I don't think there was ever a 700 series Grandson, only a 110 and 310. The Grandson's started in 1973, the Grandson II in 1975 and they all stopped being made around 1977.

The 500 and 700 series were released around the same time (after Auditronics had moved to a larger factory in Memphis) and they were made up until the early 80s. Meanwhile Auditronics kept making a redesigned 110 for the broadcast market, but didn't call it a Grandson. This may or may not be the 110b, I'm a little fuzzy on that point.

Auditronics would refer to the modules and other components as being either 501 or 701, but the consoles by the channel/bus total, eg 532 or 740. People seemed to use the terms interchangeably, so my console can be called both a 701 or a 740.

As a sidenote, Auditronics printed the word "Memphis" prominently on the 500 and 700 consoles, leading people to think that was the model name. It wasn't, they just liked telling people they were from Memphis.

Happy to be corrected, as always. And I'll gladly go through all your magazines. I have access to a very fancy corporate-level scanner - we should digitise them for posterity.

However, I'm pretty sure the 1972 ad you have is for a 110 Grandson (version 1). It had round fader knobs.

Well here's a brain dump of what (I think) I know so far about Auditronics.

Auditronics started in 1966 in Memphis - Welton Jetton and Steve Sage were the founders. They started out building custom, un-named consoles for Stax and Ardent studios.

With the success of Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" they received considerable interest in their consoles and started a proper factory.

Towards the end of the 60s they released the "Grand" - a 36 channel desk for 36 grand (1970's US dollars, about 4.2 trillion in today's money). They also released some smaller desks, under the "Grand" name, but I've never seen these.

In early 1973 they release the "son of Grand" - Grandson. The channel strips were marked as 110 series. There was a 16, and an 8 channel version (and possibly others). They pitched these at both the recording and the broadcast market.

In 1975 they released the Grandson II. I think this might be the 310 series, but I'm not absolutely sure.

The 500 and 700 series history is in my comment above. I am fairly certain that Disco Duck was produced entirely on an Auditronics console.

By the mid 80s they had fallen on hard times, they scaled back their factory and switched to only producing Broadcast consoles, such as the 220 and the 2600. In the late 80s or early 90s they were bought by Wheatstone, who still own them (not that you'd find much evidence of that fact on their website). Wheatstone made Auditronics branded products until around 2000.

In the early 2000s, Wheatstone sold the support rights and parts inventory to a company called Lightner, who still claim to support the consoles.

Well there is still plenty I don't know.

The reason there were/are so many Auditronics consoles in Australia is due to some "as-yet-unknown" importer who I'm quasi-reliably told was based in Sydney. Someone here might know who that was (at the time I was busy finishing primary school).

Also I've never seen a photo of an Auditronics "Grand" - to be honest I'm not even certain they ever existed.

Also the difference between the 110, the 110a and the 110b is far from clear.

The only difference I can see between the 110 revisions is different colour knobs!
