mics, pres and stuff
Posted: Sun Apr 11, 2010 12:57 pmok a few more things for sale. Trying to prepare for moving the studio/house and cleaning out the cupboards. Open to reasonable trades, specifically interested in high quality large diaphragm mulitpattern mics or high quality ad/da converters, I can add cash if need be.
2x Micotech Gefell MV692 with m70 caps and single extra m93 cap. The bodies are serial numbers 19875 and 19880 and the m70 caps are 22148, 22154. Pretty close and though I can't say 'matched' can't really get much closer 30 or so years after their manufacture. These have the large multi-pin connector and come with the power supply. Bought in a large transaction and the seller 'neglected to mention' there were no cables included. Cables are available from ebay germany but I just haven't done it. I also spoke to Ben Sneesby awhile ago and he converts these into a completely valve circuit supposedly turning them into a stellar mic. They've been on my list to sort out for awhile and I know I'm just not going to do it. I've tested the power supply and it works and puts out the right voltages. Haven't been able to test the mics but they look in fine condition (with a few paint nicks but otherwise good. I'm looking for $800 for the set.
4 channel ALTEC 1588c Mic Preamp. This is a 4 channel preamp built around the 1588c mic preamp module from altec powered by a JLM power supply. These are a completely discrete class a circuit with a transformer input all contained in a small canister about the size of an el34 valve, I've added pad and phantom to each channel. I've used these for years as clean preamps with a hint of colour. I built them for use in location recordings and they have been all over several live jazz albums and a few indie/folk album made in the country. The first two channels have a quasi balanced output stage as per Joe Malone's direction and the second two drive tamura output transformers from a PM series desk. I can add a pair of trimax output transformers to the first two channels for an extra $100. The pic doesn't show the mains transformer but it is included as are the cool grey marconi knobs. I'm looking for offers between $6-700
2x cheap chinese FET Condensers. Yep cheap, cheerful and kind of cool looking. Two lg Diaphragm FET mics I've only ever plugged into make certain they work. I bought a shipment of chinese mics awhile ago and grabbed these out of the catalog on a whim. Surprise, surprise I've never used them as I always go to other mics first... but if you want mics you can throw around, put on a kit and not worry about the drummer hitting them or loan to friends or whatever they'll do just fine. In regards to sound quality, well they sounded fine on my voice but I've not really listened to them in any real way. $150
be!@#$%^& bcr2000. one of the few good be!@#$%^& things. 32 rotary encoders and lots of buttons, the leds show you where the control is currently set and gives visual feedback as you change the setting. Can work in mackie mode and a few other ways too. I used it once for a large performance/installation (still has the power tag) and put it in a box and there it has sat. $100 or good offer.
Last but not least 2x Altec 1591a Mic Pre/Compressors. Racked into a 4ru roadcase with xlr i/o on the back, added phantom power and a JLM world power supply which bypasses the internal powersupply for smoother filtering and the 48v.
These have the 1588c mic pre's for a whopping 90db of gain without comp engaged. The line inputs have the 15095 isolating transformer and both line and mic pre are mixed together before compressor. useful for blending mic with DI on bass or whatever. These are neat units and though I like them I'm not using them enough. Not really going to use them on the stereo pair of a string quartet! They do excel at acoustic gtrs, snare, room mics, crushing electrics, smoothing bass, ribbon mics etc.
I'm not sure I will sell these but if I get a good offer I'll seriously consider it. I'm looking for 2000.
Having just bought an Apogee 16ad I've also got this Creamware 16 channel ad/da adat converter. Creamware went on to become sonic core. Been rock solid on several location recordings and in great condition apart from a few rack marks. The converters are decent though its no apogee but it certainly beats the be!@#$%^& gear. The inputs have individual 12db boost switches to vary the input sensitivity and the outputs have a global sensitivity switch. Great for interfacing a range of gear to the converter. I used it with an RME FireFace800 for a 28channel live and location recording rig. Not sure of the dynamic range of the converters but they are 18bit. $500 or good offer.
