Some advise wanted re the collectors market.
I'm thinking of selling my L series strat, Dec 63 It's had the body reshaped and headstock reshaped, so i know that reduces the value greatly.... BUT this was Bongo Starky's stage guitar played on the 100th show of countdown and many of his live shows. etc and he bought it from Mick Rudd of Spectrum / Murcepts. I bought it off Bongo in the late 70's. I'm looking for the best way to let collectors of Australian rock and roll memorabilia know of the sale. Is there an auction house that specializes in oz R&R memorabilia.

Have a talk to the guys at Jacksons Rare Guitars, though I understand they don't like to use the owner history as a price or selling factor, so you would get a price based on the guitar as it stands.

Think the biggest thing to decide is if the guitar is worth more because its a modifed 63 strat, or who used it and when. I am sure that if it were someone internationally famous from the 60s/70s then that would be a major contributer to the price.

I guess ebay would be another option that would have a fairly large audience looking for interesting things, both as vintage guitars and collecters items. You could list it with a reserve and see what happens, then post whereever you can about the guitar while it is for sale.

Not aware of collector auctions for guitars these days, but would be interested to hear otherwise.

I think Jacksons would be worth having a chat with at the very least..
But in Melbourne there's the Music Swap Shop. I've known of a few weird guitars to have gone in and out of that place.. They may be worth a call too..
Ace Guitars in Maldon Vic could help out too.. I had a chat with the guy there the other day (my memory is failing me and I can't recall his name!!) but seemed like he'd be across such things..

Or you could try Darren at the Guitar Emporium in South Melbourne. Haven't been there in ages but a cool second hand guitar store. Swap Shop is also great.

Yes.. Forgot about the Guitar Emporium.. Very knowledgeable there also on all things guitar and of that vintage.

what on earth were they thinking!

i reckon that guitar is a parts only value thing , i dont think there is enough interest in r&R collecters to be higher then the parts value
err.. providing the original pick ups and pots and plates are still intact !

Yep, it's a great playing great sounding strat. I think John Mayall started the short lived (thankfully) strat reshaping fad...Lobby Loyd was another who joined this prestigious club. Only thinking of selling it to fund studio improvements so if it doesn't fetch a dollar it will stay with me

to answer your original question chisties ( australia) do a (pop culture) memorabilia auction once a year
i asked them to value my JOK festival records ampex 351 and a few other things ..
every thing has a price but ebay is a better bet then what i was told .

so i would run it on ebay with a great description and a few categories and see if you can jag a guitar playing doctor in the right age group

Thanks for the info and suggestions. In the past I have found the guitar shops are not that helpful in situations like this, I think the info you gave Rick is the sort of direction this sale is going to go. I am really putting it out there to test the water. It's one of those things that's only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. I really don't know what it could fetch and i'm hoping to find a memorabilia collector with more money than he needs to buy it for $xxxxxx, give or take an x or two........ so i can replace it with a nice non collectible strat and have enough left over for some studio gear i have my eye on.
