I have a older switchcraft 96 point bantam patchbay. Heaps of Neutrik connectors (TS, TRS and XLR) - came from a decommissioned studio.
You can have the lot for $200 + postage (i'm in Sydney)
(the plugs alone would be worth more!!)

May I interject with suggestion? Let me know if this is out of line! I just want to pass on something that a lot of us in this game have learned the hard way.

IMO, by looking for and buying cheap gear, you are pretty much a hiding to nothing. Person X, for example buys 3 100 buck compressors. Six months down the track, he realizes that 100 buck compressors generally don't sound very good, so he saves up and drops the coin on couple of 500 buck compressors. They impress him for a while, but again six months down the line, he's better at engineering and realizes that his 500 buck jobs aren't that flash either. To add insult to injury, now that he's realized this, his 500 buck compressors are six months old and they're only worth marginally more than his original 100 buck compressors, which are sitting in the corner gathering dust, or as Greg Simmons puts it "sitting in the bottom of the rack, looking at you saying "you idiot!".

This process repeats until person X finally works out that good quality equipment can't usually be bought for the same price as a microwave or a toaster or a day and a half's work and they finally scrape it together and get some nice bit of kit. At this point person X can feel a little better because not only does his thing sound good now, it's also money in the bank because he chose to invest in a piece of gear which will hold its value, and probably appreciate in his lifetime.

Along the way, person X spent 300 dollars on 100 dollar compressors, 1000 on 500 dollar compressors and countless amounts more on everything in between, before finally spending a couple of grand on one. I don't know about everyone else but 3 and a half or 4 grand on a 2 grand box seems too much for me.

Person Y on the other hand wanted gear too, but resisted the temptation to buy equipment that he wouldn't use for a significant amount of time. Person Y skips meals, catches the bus, hell, even has a few less nights at the pub a week, and eventually makes every purchase a winner. Not only a winner but a couple of grand cheaper than person X's.

So maybe that bantam patchbay and neutrik connectors that you turned down in the long run might have been a wiser choice than a couple of bezringerr compressors. Look I'm sorry if this has sounded discouraging or condescending, but I was person X once, wanting so bad just to fill my rack, and I've still got plenty of "you idiot" hanging around to remind me. I don't really know that many Person Y's, that's for sure. That said, Rick said to me once something along the lines of "If it's stopping you from making music, then go buy something cheap and get on with it" :)

Anyways, tell me to shut up and everyone get on with their sales.

Over and out

i agree with what your saying mate, of course i want more expensive gear, id gladly skip the botttom line and go straight for the top, right at this moment when im messing around with compression on drums and various things, these might serve me a little better right now, i know ill end up with an expensive habbit soon enough:)

Dont want to be a pain but as you progress through the cheap gear up to the more expensive gear your ear starts to learn what to listen for and then distinguishes between what is crap (crap- being subjective unto the beholder) and what is good. So I dont necessarily think that progressing straight to the best gear when you cant hear the difference the great gear is making could also be pointless. You need to hone your craft.
I would not tell a beginner guitar player to go out and buy a USA Strat to start on. I also wont tell him/her to go out and buy a cheap Behinger strat copy to start on either.
Just offering another opinion.
If you want to be in this game for the long hual, its worth putting the time in and training your ears on any gear that passes through your fingers.
Cheers

Sorry couldn't help myself... love a good strat bashing. Pete did start it after all. So if you never own a strat you can stay young and dumb, or does it not work that way around?

Oh yeah so it is.

To the OP. If you're after some cheap be!@#$%^& gear, keep an eye on the bay... This kind of stuff can be had dime a dozen. Also look out for art and alto, same kind of deal
