The LB1 has achieved legendary status amongst the world´s most critical professionals such as the BBC and worlds audiophiles alike. Over its 12 years reign as the benchmark monitor it has undergone calculated upgrades ensuring its premiere status and unassailable performance levels.

The man solely responsible for this audio legend is Peter Thomas - a true devotee to the advancement of loudspeaker performance through a groundbreaking technology. His summed knowledge and engineering acumen has been the focus of one his original designs, the LB1.

PMC design and build philosophy is difficult to improve upon as every component is hand selected and matched then recorded long before the model is finally assessed by ear. Bettering the LB1´s this could only be done by component selection under the strict instruction from Peter himself and modifications to the original design using intelligent engineering gleaned from groundbreaking models like the AML1 active.
The LB1 uses a 5 1/2" Dynaudio woofer, the same one used in the Totem Model One, and a number of other speakers. The tweeter is a fabric soft dome. The woofer is loaded with a transmission line, which explains the lopped-off upper cabinet rear, which internally provides a non-parallel surface as the line runs up and down the interior of the enclosure, and flares out to a rectangular slot at the cabinet's bottom front.

Connectors are bi-wire gold-plated types with large brass nuts that will accommodate spade lugs easily. It is finished in black veneer. Though not a particularly handsome speaker, the LB1 isn't ugly, either, and its compact size doesn't tend to dominate a room. Shown in the picture on the Foundation stands, it will work well with any solid stands with a height of 20 to 28". They will also work well in bookshelves or on flat surfaces, where the boundary close to the transmission line port will enhance the deepest bass.

This was one of the first speakers to be measured using our newly refined techniques, which include an additional curve, which is the simple product of all 4 axial measurements, and which I therefore call the Summed Axial Response (SAR). It is seen just under the quasianechoic curve at top. The axial curves are below, measurements taken at 0, 15, 30 and 60 off the lateral axis of the drivers.
