it's not mint but it looks pretty good
if it was in a shock mount I would give it 8.5 put of ten

U89:
No personality - Clean
Used a lot by classical type engineers.
switchable patterns
fairly flat response - takes EQ amazingly without odd artifacts poking out ( like NT1/ Rhode stuff and the whole TLM series - try eqing the top end on these and you will suffer tinnea of the ears not tinnitus)
If you want more personality - add a valve mic pre or comp on the front end.
I've informed a mate of its sale who recently used my U89 with his electrodyne preamp and he was more than impressed for lead vocals - he came to the same conclusion as all my points above - especially how it takes EQ in the mix.
I'm never gonna talk about a U89 again

they are bound to see this thread and i dont want to cause or condone any harm when everybodies intentions were good from the get go

Indeed, the rode won't be coming up here. The real reason is that Rick keeps borrowing it to work on his new solo album and I can't hold onto it long enough to sell. The old neumanns are just for show... Ricks really an nt1 guy!

Fair call, Rick - Nick should just GIVE me that NT1A, right? Once you've finished with it, that is!

Ah well, its a common story - for all those who bash Rode mics (and I'm not saying Nick was doing that), owners become suddenly possessive when challenged to offload them!

Oh man, definitely not bashing rode mics. I've got an nt1000 and it gets some use just about every session. They're certainly not toys! I've got the nt5s as well, consecutive serials, and they're super useful too!

They're either real microphones or doing a bloody good job of pretending!

Exactly! I've an NT1000 and NT2A, use 'em heaps for MS recording. Anytime a RODE-basher wants to sell me a near-new NT1a for $100, let me know!

Hey Rick - what's the difference between a U89 and a U87?
Some 87's have the 89 board right?

The original NT1s were Chinese imports rebranded as 'rode', if I'm correctly mistaken.

the difference really is the size and design of the capsule the u89 is a bit smaller and has more patterns
the older u89 were a bit smaller in body size as well
neumann were trying to kick akg 414 on their butts as the 414 was selling well in the late 80s because it had "more patterns" then a neumann 87
i reckon neumann tuned them directly with the 414 in mind but made them a touch louder!
i dont reckon they sound like neumanns at all !

but as shown by the amount of people and speed this one was sold people love them for that difference

i reckon a pair would be really usuable as they are quite dark compared to "modern mics "

but on their own i reckon i would always have something better on hand in my collection .
i know a lot of people use them as a "poor mans 67 tone " for vocal tone and i reckon thats probably right with the right mic pre

classic guys love them and get very upset at me when i diss the poor little u89

all new u87a1 have had a "u89 " circuit board in them for many years well at least its marked as u89 on the board , neumann probably stuff them with
different parts for each model but i dont know really ... i havent actually seen a brand new u89ai in the flesh

i quite like the new ( last 20 + years ) u87a1 ( with that 89 board ) they have a really airy top end that most old neumanns dont have ,
a lot of guys hate them for that because what was once a great overhead pair mic is now too bright

but stick them on a vocal and you can leave it that way right through the mix without having to get a gml eq to pop the air back in
so i reckonthe sound change of a u87 was a good addition ( twenty five years ago ) but somehow they are still considered " new 87s "

i haven't opened a brand new u87ai in the last few years so some things may have changed

I have I believe an early 80's U87 with the 89 pcb. When I asked G Wagner about it his reply was that it is probably better than an 87 as the specs are better on that model board than the 87. FWIW. One of my staple mics, female vox, acc guit, piano in fig 8 et al.
