New audio editing service available

Hi Turtlerockers,

I just wanted to let you all know of a new audio editing service my company is providing -

Basically - the service is called 'Virtual Engineer', and as the name suggests, is offering audio editing services that would often be done by full time assistants at larger studios.

This includes - basic session clean ups (top and tailing, track ordering, etc...), minor timing corrections all the way through to full session pocketing (all done by hand), comping, drum replacement/reinforcement, vocal tuning.

All tasks are carried out to your indervidual specifications and usually returned within 24 hrs.

Your files are simply uploaded to darksun's secure ftp server, and then downloaded by you once the edit is completed.

I also mix but thought that editing would be of much more interest to you guys!

Anyway, I thought that some here may be interested in this service, and don't worry, I won't be continually spaming this here!

Well, I'm not exactly sure how to take your reply but I'm not offering a service where people send their files to me and I run it through a number of automated processes and send it back.

The processes I'm offering are very time intensive and some studios just can't afford the full time man power to do such edits anymore. Also, with so many recording at home now, they're not really familiar with preparing a session that mix engineers will be able to work with straight off.

Now if it's a issue with modern production techniques, then that's another argument completely. Whether it's right or wrong, the amount of editing in most commercial releases is extensive!

Anyway, we'll see how it goes...

Interesting. How much would you charge for a 4 min metal song of drums, to be quantized hard to a grid?

Jon - I think it is a good idea
Most mixes I do through a console (that I have not tracked) need a few hours mainly cleaning & sound replacing kiks, cleaning tom tracks - long vocal/instrument pauses etc.
A couple of hours of this stuff for a 12 track album can really add up. (I love it when I open a session and all the outputs are routed to the right console inputs - everything is clean - you hit play and start mixing straight away ) - I also get better results from my work not having to focus for hours on micro details instead of being creative with the mix straight-up
Rick nailed it - you really need to be shit hot at it.
if you are just another assistant engineer ( but a virtual one ) - you may need to distinguish what you do as a service that I can't get from any other 100's of assistant's that are begging for a job each year - offering their services for free just to get some work.
Even though you are editing - you are assisting a mix engineers requests - and they will all be different.
- its all about forming really good working relationships

man, i really don't enjoy editing, or drum replacing....

similarly, i don't trust anything automated either....

so, did you write a programme that does this for you? or is there an off the shelf product that does this?

yeah as chris picked up from my response
if you are amazing at whatever part of the process you do then let people know about it - there is always work for people that can do something better then the guy that doesnt want to do it at all
but it would take a pretty special circumstance for a studio to outsource that kind work when there are a line of assistants waiting to work through the night
so be pretty special is my advice - and if you are let people know .... (to a point )

so the point being what ever you can do that is amazing ..push that i reckon
your original post was very general and almost abstract in its form
keep it simple when hustling for work - thats the only way

As for my skills as an editor - anyone is more then welcome to send me a track to edit to their specific needs and I'll do it for you free of charge (just one track per customer) so you can see the standered of my work.

My back ground is as a classical musician - I was a prefessional trumpet player in many top Australian orchestras for over 8 years - so I have a very good ear! (B.Music, B.Audio Prod)

In response to the automated question - in terms of timing corrections and other editing tasks it is all done by hand - and I do belive I'm very good at it - but you'll have to hire me to find that one out!

For drum replacement/reinforcement, I use slate digital trigger to place my samples and then fine tune by hand.

I do understand the competitive nature of the industry and in general I'm not aiming at studios who employ (or take advantage of) full time assistants. But hey - as you say, if I'm good enough then it will show in my work...it will just take some time to show that.

Again - I offer to edit a single track for anyone free of charge once.

Maybe - the assistants are taking advantage of the studio -
you may have to use "Belief Replace" on that one. (by hand)
