Hi guys,
I just bought an AKG D20 mic and now need a 3 pin Tuchel connector for it. Does anyone
Have one lying around that they could sell me?

Cheers

Ah, not the normal Tuchel unfortunately, unless it's been modified. I have a pair of D20s and a D15 from the mid 50s. The connector they use is an AKG Custom, a 3S17B for the D20 or a 3B17C (Tuchel 3007 special Order) for the D15, Extremely hard to find. I have 1 and have been searching for another 1 or 2 for a couple of years. AKG are rumoured to still have some in Vienna, but at a price, over 100 euro (inc delivery) last time I saw. I've been toying with the idea of machining up my own versions in brass plate for the pins and "potting" them then making a crude body, as they're not something you'd use in a live gig, so they don't have to be all that rugged.
Great Microphone though, popular in the 50s for Radio Jocks, as seen in "The Boat that Rocks", although that was a D12 without the Bass rolloff. Also good is the D25, a D20 in an elastic suspension, as seen on Spicks and Specks.
Best of luck finding one, if you find 2 , I want one :D

This may seem sacrilegious to some but why not modify the mic to use a standard xlr?

Umm what?

The bit that actually matters, ie the microphone will still function. Looks would be almost unchanged if it's done properly. Why not modify something to make it work more seamlessly in the modern world?

People are happy to demolish classic desks and flog them off for parts, I'm a bit confused as to why a slight modification in this case is worse than that.

Yeah but that's the point, it would have to be done properly...haha.... something I'm not capable of. If there was a way to do it then sure why not, but I don't
see how it could be done. It looks to be a different size to an XLR plug.
