WTB / Where to Buy: Rack bits and pieces

Where in Sydney is a good place to find rack bits and pieces, e.g. rails, shelves, whatnot, for various DIY studio furniture projects?

And does anyone have any good local carpenter suggestions to save me hurting myself with my useless woodworking skills? I'm near Surry Hills.

Cheers.

I bought rack rails from http://www.proaudiostash.com.au/

They have a lot of diy stuff, but I'd also be interested in finding any better shops in Sydney. The only other suppliers I found (in Canberra) were really expensive, mainly sold heavy duty rack shelving for larger IT rooms...

ProAudio can get rack bits and pieces, they'll just cost a lot of money...

Be aware that some of their rackstrip is different to the JANDS standard types. In fact JANDS is where I'd get my rackstrip from. These guys have great shelves, powerboards etc.

Thanks for the links guys.

Both these places seem to only have rack rails with square holes that take those annoying pop in rack bolt thingys. Can't stand 'em.

Is there nowhere to buy nice simple rails with M5 screw holes (or whatever the size is)?

I'll check Jands...

The only stripping I've seen that's threaded is inside SKB cases. The threaded strip is a separate piece of steel, behind the aluminium angle facia. You may be able to get the threaded steel flat piece from whoever sells SKB?

pretty sure nearly all ABS plastic rack cases have that rackstrip with threaded holes, usually front and back too so if you know someone with a plastic case you could pinch the strip from which ever end isn't being used

I have an SKB case and a few others, Gator maybe? Only the SKB has threaded strip. The others use cage nuts.

Cage nuts are the standard for rack mount stuff - they can pinch your fingers but at least they don't fall out whilst you're balancing equipment / screwdriver / screw / nut / credit card etc etc.... \:D/

Swamp Industries in ACT have some reasonably priced gear and good service. Selby (motho on eBay) in Vic also have some budget gear.

If you go with steel gear those el cheapo himalaya sleeping mats from $2 shops are good dampeners for the shelves too.

Quick follow up:

I ended up ordering threaded rack rails from Sweetwater, and sucked it up on the shipping costs.

Can't stand cage nuts.

Sweetwater's customer service (for me at least) has always been A1. Rails arrived in 3 days from the US.

Guys, a good supplier for Racks and Hardware, cabling etc we use for studio builds is Madison Technologies
offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
http://www.madisontech.com.au/

Service is excellent, prices are good. We used Madison for pretty much all our Racks, shelves, cage nuts , mounting hardware, Cable and connectors for the last 8 years including Brisbane Sydney and Melbourne Studio builds
