Why not just gaff a piezo to the skin?

I would do the contact mic too - much more accurate when tracking - get all the ghost notes easily, then you can spend the time later re-trigering/sound replacing from an actual recording rather than the trigger.
On other drums its no big deal but the snare is best done this way I find.
What brand Piezo are you using Kurt?

The first time I used one I tore it out of a toy phone full of lollies that I got at Woolies for $2.

I have never tried recording the sound from one though Chris, I just wire a jack onto them and use them to trigger a DMPro. A layer of neoprene (mouse mat!) under the element helps if you're getting mistriggering. I've also seen people selling them with a rubber coating which would probably make them a little more durable.

We've used these ones for all sorts of things including triggers. Also sealed them up in clear epoxy and put them in water. Just need to solder a guitar lead on to them.

Just so you know i bought some cryptic contact mics and theyre working out awesome

I think you just saved me dropping my hard-earned on a set of midi triggers.

So... some el-cheapo contact mics gaffa'd to various drums works a treat then? And I can save the cash for upgrading my overhead mics?

I'm mainly interested in snare and kick replacement initially, using a mix of Logic / BFD2 / other trickery, but will probably need to pick up something more powerful, like from Steven Slate.

Any other guru advice on this one?

fyi the Ddrum Pro version is much more robust and can be fitted without removing a tuning screw. There is also a dual-element version for added redundancy.

I have found that taping about 1" square of gaff to the trigger (where it touches the shell) both protects the shell from damage and reduces crosstalk (cross-zone triggering).

One thing that doesn't work properly with these triggers is positional sensing (on high-end Roland modules) - so I went for a Handelsbu trigger for the snare.

yep you're right.
I think gaff on the shell would stop it from being hypersensitive.

that being said. contact mics rock because you can put them anywhere! i mean, who needs a drum trigger when you can use a cowbell? or tape it to a keyboard?

we did that for our new show, looks ridicolous, but slap the keyboard and trigger a clap. hahah works a treat.

btw aj. the red shot is better on the kick because it has a piece of foam which stops it from ghost noting.

i will try gaff on the snare because its not great when you want to do rolls flams etc
