WTB - power amplifier

Hey t-rock,

I am in the process of putting together a bass rig and am looking for a power amp to drive the whole thing. If anyone has a power capable of 400w-500w per side at 8ohms and are willing to part with it let me know.

Oh and not a digital amp with the switching power supply! Must comply with turtlerock mantra of big/heavy and gets hot.

Pete

Sorry, got nothing but keep your eyes peeled on eBay, a Crest CA6 would be perfect.
Have seen a lot of people using Yamaha power amps too, but they have a switch mode power supply. As a PA guy I must point out that 1000 watts of bass amp is severe overkill! The biggest bass amp I deal with semi-regularly is a David Eden (world traveller?) 800 watt Class D running 2 4x10 cabs. It's stupidly loud.

Thanks Kurt!

I hear you on the watts - it's not that I want to be stupid loud (well, there is that) but mainly so I never run out of headroom. A crest CA6 would be ideal.

A friend is able to hook me up with a Crown XLS 602 - any experience with these from the PA side? Looks like 380w stereo at 8 ohms. Might be able to do the job.

I don't have any Crown amps, but they're pretty ubiquitous so I assume they're reliable. I borrowed an XLS D series (Class D) amp off a mate to run foldback once, it was loud...

I have been using when i need to a Crown Macro-tech 600 with my Demeter pre. It is heavy, has headroom and has enough watts.

I have heard good things about those. Looks like they are discontinued though. If anyone has a lead for a secondhand one I would be up for it.

Pretty envious of your bass rig now Barney!

The crown is with a friend at the mo, if he doesn't buy it i'll contact you asap. Wouldn't recommend some of the higher powered crowns 1200, 2400 etc that go cheap from ex PA houses, had a friend use one in a bass rig and hence he's looking at buying mine.

The other amps that are good are the EV (*#)1200. Can't remember model number but it's a two rack space class B, heavy, good etc.

Thanks Barney! I'm definitely keen if your mate backs out.

Cheers

I heard that the Macrotechs have a somewhat slow slew rate... I would be interested to know if this is true or a rumour?

I have a Quest QA2000 if you are interested still in the box. 8ohms 550watts a side 890watts a side at 4ohms 1300watts a side at 2 ohms.
Its a class b amp and weighs 30 kgs.
Is that heavy enough for you?
I can send the manual if needed to check it.
The amp has been in the box for about 5 years never opened as I never got around the getting the right Pa I wanted and now I would probably go with a small powered system anyway.
They sold for $1400. I think I it would be realistic that I would only get 1/2 that being $700. Let me know. Plus free freight.
Cheers
