Hi Greg,

What can you tell me about the 00-17? Many of these old martins (I have a '42 00-17) have had the headstock reset, replacement tuners, pickguard & the odd cracks repaired, I'd be keen to know more about yours. Some are done sympathetically (an professionally) whilst others just in good intention! Got any photos also?

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
It's on the bay of evil right now if you want to take a look.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?%20ViewItem&item=220774629007&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:AU:1123#ht_1140wt_1139

It's a very nice sounding guitar perfect for slide or fingerpicking. Records beautifully. It has had a neck reset in the past and some overspray which I have tried to take off with mixed success. So it's a lovely player but no collector's dream.

Thanks Greg. Yes, hard to find these in original condition or at least period-correct upkeeps done by people who don't just reach for some varnish! I've never gotten overspray on guitars like these; give me the scratched and worn any day. Fortunately I found a lovely one in Nashville last year whilst looking in Gruhns Guitars...a lolly shop if ever I've seen one. It blows me away so much that I keep my eyes open every now and then for them. I found from playing 4 or 5 of the same ones at Gruhns how vastly different these old beasts sound...from thin and sparkly to rich and robust.

Dave,
I've got a '46 as well. It was a very hard decision to pick one of them for sale. The 52 is rich and robust while the 46 is sparkly and light. The 52 has a nicer neck as well. I'll probably regret it but 2 of them seems a bit indulgent when the family lives in a shoebox in the middle of the road. You know any good chippies/brickies who like old Martins?
