Hi everyone

I’d like some help pricing this Digidesign TDM Mix system 32 I/O with computer, cards, interfaces, digidesign cables, etc.. in other words complete system.
System consists of;

3 x Digidesign 888/24
1x Digidesign 882
4x Digidesign PCI cards (all installed in computer)
4x Digilink cables
1x Mac Quicksilver 1250Mhz G4 running Protools w/ mountains of plugins
1x HP 20” computer monitor (computer has second monitor out)
1x Rosendahl Nanosync audio clock and video sync box + bnc cables to link to interfaces

Runs really well with no issues. All working as it should.

Any help with pricing this system would be much appreciated.

an interesting thing to discover would be what (if any) is the upgrade cost? digi used to offer clear upgrade paths that involved sending in the old gear and replacing it with new at a decent discount... that might tell you what kind of saving you might make and therefore a value for someone wanting to buy HD cheaper.

Isnt it interesting not that long ago this was the most common big studio setup - thousands of albums would have been recorded through, and mixed from those 888's .
Its still a very good stable usable multitrack format - add a good 8ch ADDA for clocking the 888's and it would be great setup.
Were always wanting the new things ....

Myles... seems like it's still available for hardware upgrades. I'll investigate.

I agree Chris... it's still a very stable and very usable system.
I don't normally run massive track counts but when I was using this system I could run 50-60 tracks with lots of plugins with no bother.

I've had a couple of inquiries about price. Anyone want to recommend a final price for this complete system? Everything works/runs beautifully. Lots of grunt.

Ok... So the full story is avid are currently offering an upgrade of the cards to hd native card for $1750. That is I give my avid dealer the pci cards plus $1750 and they give me a new hd native card (which I already have). That's a saving of around $2100.
The interfaces are not upgradable ATM... But...there is a strong rumour that once this upgrade period finishes in 2 days, avid will be reinstating the full upgrade again including interfaces which will make it a much bigger and better deal.

so I reckon that puts the card value at around 1000-1500 and more if the 888 are upgradeable. Can you use the 888 as legacy interfaces? I have a feeling that you can so that means that if you have the HD-native card paired with a 192 or similar then you can daisy chain the 888s for more i/o, right?

seems like the stuff is still worth decent money but as I already have HD I'm not buying...

That's right Myles. They just chain onto the 192 etc for more I/O.

What's your method of calculating the 1000-1500 value for the cards?

I was simply thinking that whilst you are saving money on the upgrade the hassle of ownership transfer, organising upgrade, incentive to buyer etc that 500 or so off the actual trade price was reasonable. Up to you guys to negotiate whatever but that was just me thinking. Can you upgrade each card to HD or does it go as a whole system?

I think it needs to be one core card and one other card as a minimum for upgrading.

Weren't they dropping support for legacy interfaces in v.9?

I'll throw the prices in that I know.

888/24 $150-$200(inc digilink cable)
882 $75-$100
Are the cards Mix core? (ie like a mix 4 as it was known?)
Computer $250 (plug ins extra obviously)
Dunno about nanosync (but I think around $500)
The problem is EOSS and software compat.
PT 9 only works on Intel Macs with PCIe cards (obviously)
Your stuck using either PT7 (maybe 8?)

I've had a few legacy PT TDM systems in the past and the software end of life has always been the problem..

Protools TDM 6.4 I think was the last supported version of protools with mix. Right before they released automatic delay compensation.
