Does anyone have a pair of these old Apple powered computer speakers they'd like to off load?

I have only seen two sets of these for sale on eBay oz, one of which I bought. They sell for about $150.

I'm guessing you read that Clearmountain interview...

I found a pair of them on the side of the road a few years ago.. at the exact time I was building my Mame Gaming console.
As I was on the lookout for some simple powered speakers, I hacked em up and slapped them inside the console.

That must be one fine sounding console!

You know the deal... Folks are looking out for these instead of auratones...

My Grandmother has a set of them for her imac... She is a bit of a hipster rockin' one of those G4's. I'm sure if you lent her your ear for an hour and if you didn't mind being fed some fresh scones with jam and tea she would let you borrow them!

I love fresh scones and long chats with grandmothers.

As I read the article, Mr Clearmountain was not saying these speakers were good in themselves, but simply made him work hard to get a good sound out of them. In fact, he'd probably describe them as average to low-end speakers. If he got a good mix in these things, it would be a good mix on anything. He positioned them close together so that the mix was almost mono, and then went from there. The story is rather that the magic lies in the mixing talent, and in theory any lowish fidelity speakers will serve the same purpose in this story as the Apple ones. I'm sure Dick Smith or any computer electronics store could help out with such a pair within your $20 budget. I have a pair of the DS "PA" speakers (2 way, 4" paper cones) which serve the same function. But I also have my custom EJ Jordan nearfields, because I'm not as good as Bob!

The only reason to go for the Apple ones in particular is so you can mix in the same monitors that Bob used - which is a road to the dark side, as I'm sure a bloke with your experience knows only too well. Why did the record producer cross the road? 'cause that's how the Beatles did it!

So by all means go for them, but I'd suggest a garage sale / council clean up day can deliver you a set of similar beasties if that's the way you want to work.

And if there are scones going ....

To be honest I didn’t realise these crappy little computer speakers were so sort after by all the bob followers. I felt like I'd stumbled upon them when viewing his website and thought they could be fairly easy to come by and achieve exactly what I’m looking for (including being powered and cheapo). Seems like a few people have done the same.
I know this is well and truly a low end reference. Their fidelity is not what I’m concerned about. They just happened to tick a few boxes as far as size, being powered and connectivity. I wasn’t looking for a good set of monitors, I’ve got those. This set of reference speakers I’m looking for is not for sound quality, but for balance reference.
The description you gave (or bob’s) of the apple speakers is the same feeling I have with NS10’s. I had a pair for years up until recently. I had to say enough. These wouldn’t replace the NS10’s, just to fill a gap.
So I've been looking around for a set of brutely honest low end reference speakers (something not far from my $20 garage sale budget), something I can flick too to tell me some problems. I use an ipod dock that has a good sound for reference and then event opals for nearfields and these were to fill a gap as a reference for background music balance…like ceiling speakers in supermarkets or similar. Basically, just another reference.
Will keep looking.
Oh and now I've got a craving for warm scones for morning tea. (mayde devinshire tea?)

Save a search on eBay and see what turns up - you might grab them cheap.

I bought my pair on a whim after they were mentioned In a few places as aurotone equivalents for less dough and for me they fill the job of crappy reference but so would a bunch of other speakers. I can't say how useful they would be to someone else as opinions vary and all that.
