For sale is a Sound Workshop 1600 console circa 1979 (USA)

Strange unit, 18 channels, with 16 busses, LED meters, comprehensive master section, full bantam patch panel, rackmount PSU. Has the older style WIDE channel strips, so quite a large console for its count.
Has wood veneer trim on the sides and top, very sturdy huge aluminium legs, steel frame. Full service manual with schematics.

Came out of Sunshine Studios in Brisbane in the early 90's, has basically been laying around my garage since then. Not too bad sounding either in its day. Certainly superior to any mass manufactured equivalent of today.

Too scared to turn it on, but was certainly operational last time it was powered up. So certainly AS-IS.

Could be a good project for someone, or cool looking summing mixer!

Interesting console, unfortunately my garage is like yours, so nowhere to squeeze it, but there's a load of transformers in there, the beyer mic input tx's and line output tx's and for someone who wants to cut it up, the 4 band parametric eq's on each channel are on their own separate pcb which could be pulled out and rack mounted ..... hmmm gotta see if I can do something bout my garage. Somebody better grab this before I do!

Michael, are you sure? I have a Series 40, which is basically the same as the 1600 (many of my schematics are labelled 1600 & are the same circuits as the series 40), there are no transformers apart from the master section & the eq is 3 band parametric - unless there were tx & 4 band options for this console?

They are a great mixer, btw. You are getting a lot for $500. I hope it doesn't get cut up though. The best feature of the console is the way it sums. If anyone here buys it please feel free to contact me for advice on mods & upgrades.

Definitely has transformers - smaller can type on the input and a larger type on the bus outs

EQ is 3band as Glenn stated.

i recorded a Robert Forster album 'calling from a country phone' @sunshine on that console.
good old thing -proper electronics, old school headroom.
didn't much like eq...'Q' to narrow for my taste. i think this is probably modable though
the album was mixed by tony cohen@sunshine.

All of the early Custard records were made on that thing too.....

ha! Custard.. a name that doesn't come up very often. have been friends with dave since way back then, and funnily enough mixing the "reunion" shows this week in sydney.
