I own two pairs of speaker stands, but they are all set at low couch listening height. I'm sitting in an office chair with my monitors around abdomen height.
Is there a good brand of higher speaker stand - hi-fi quality - not mega expensive?
Where would you buy such things?

I had a pair made.
Welded aluminium filled with kiln dried sand and a rubber in rubber decoupling system.
I absolutely love them. The speakers sit the excact height I want and are very stable with out any vibrations/coupling.
Down side is they are fixed height, so I had to mock somethin up before hand to test.
They are also a bit on the heavy side, but still a one peron lift.

Probably best for me to find a Sydney based outlet though.

I have custom welded 1/4 inch steel ones.
But also I made 2 pairs out of 25mm plywood and filled with sand - these are suprizingly good -
You can make them in a hour or 2 and will cost you about $80.
If I had to make more again I would forget doing metal ones

So effectively you are making a tall wood box?

Exactly but with a wide flat panel for the floor base - these I made double thickness ply - and you can do the same for the top if your monitors are large - paint it black like the Rolling Stones

i also have tall wood boxes, made out of MDF and painted black.

the box dimensions are the same as my speakers, so it looks pretty shmick too! (i also have the wide base like chris described).

Ditto for what Chris said, but using Yellowtongue flooring panels instead of plywood. I find it is denser than plywood (and cheaper).

Bunnings sell the Yellowtongue at $20 a sheet (1800 by 1200) and dried sand is $6 a bag.

I got a pair of steel tube tripod stands from b1Brokers - $49 for the pair. They're very light and collapsible.... can mount PA spkrs on them and they also come with a plastic flange for "regular" spkrs - I put a timber platform on each one with some isolation material and have my main monitors on them - the spkrs end up about eye (or ear) height.

You could fill each tube with expandable foam if you got any resonance (I don't).

My floor is just floorboards on wooden joists. I'm not sure if would take the weight of two 1.5 metre high boxes filled with sand.
On a second subject....
Is there anyone who makes nice desktop sized wooden boxes for rack gear?
Small, like 65cm across, 30cm top to bottom and just 15cm deep.
I was thinking I could construct something out of timber from Bunnings, but I have no tools.

Your floor should hold the weight easy - the actual upright section of the column can be 120mm x 150mm with a plinth top and bottom
And you can do the same with a desktop version - also - the sand is not a must, you could fill them with old pillows or anything that deadens the chamber (I also have a pair of desktop ones that have no sand in them)
And - you can go to some timberyards, place an order and thay will cut to any size the ply/mdf - so all you need is a drill to screw it all together.
Or go to a stereo shop - but I imagine they wont be cheap
