Looking for some extra channels for a record coming up. I can get an ISA428 for around $1400 so if anyone's got anything around that level sonically but lowered priced let me know and it might fit the bill.

hey Andy, not sure if you've heard of Line Audio from sweden, but they make an 8 channel preamp, which is very nicely specked, sells for 1000 Aus, i think.

There's a few reviews floating online, some liken it to a grace sound...

But, for $1660 including delivery to aus, i reckon you cant beat a DAV Electronics BG2. I bought the 2 channel version which was dlivered last weekend, blown away by the sound, its over the price you mentioned, but i needed to mention it....

I've heard good things about the DAV stuff, but the BG doesn't have transformers does it? I should have mentioned I would prefer trannies (ooh). I have been considering building one of Joe's BA4 kits, but not sure I can be bothered with the build as don't have a lot of free time before this gig.

ah, it may be pre-op (trannyless). Can drop mick an email and ask if he makes them with trannies though, He's known to modify his designs sometimes.

EDIT: adding trannies may be too much of an operation for the design...idk....doesnt hurt to ask though.

A Sytek MPX4aii can be had for almost less than a thousand dollars (direct from the manufacturer) and it is in my opinion the best hands-down bang for the buck pre there is.

I've had mine for almost 10 years and I pretty much use it on every session.

I would sell you my JLM Ba4's for Around $1200.
JLM input trans, JLM 99v op amps and DI's on two channels. Works and sounds great.

Thanks Paul, I'll keep it in mind if I decide to go the Joe way.

P.S. The kit for this config is $1135. Another $895 to have JLM build it.
I built mine and had my tech check it. They have been great, had them for about three years. I no longer need them.

Hi, yeah I've actually recently priced the exact same config minus the di's. I've built a few bits of Joe kit, they are always great.

Hi ChinaGraph, yeah, I like JLM stuff. We have been using a bunch of his interfacing amps to integrate our live to air console at PBSFM with the broadcast equipment. Very good stuff and easy to build and utilize.
One thing I love about the JLM pre's is that they are totally quiet at any gain setting and they have loads of headroom.
This makes them bomb proof in use. All of the gain range is usable (unlike most console pres) and you can forget about clipping the pre. So easy!

oh man, vari-impedance is one of the greatest features on a pre....i keep bangin on about it incessantly..i do apologise...on the JLMs especially that i've used, it really gives the mics ur recording with more grab, or reach, or something, just seems to make the capsule sound soooo sensitive, which is JUST the ticket for softer sounds, or for making something more stubborn (if you want the opposite effect).

absolutely love the uses for it on the JLM tg's.

A note, from Joe, if youre building a BA(d) because it has 2 gain (1 trim) you have to sacrifice one of the knob placements, i think he mentioned having to put it on the back of the mic pre...as the BA faceplate for the kit seem to be made up just for BAs with 1 gain control.

Hi, mine don't have the variable impedance pots installed, but I have them somewhere.. I will include them with the pres if someone wants them.
