Anyone interested in buying a Gyraf G7 I built from one of these microphones? It has a NOS Phillips EF86 tube and an RK12 capsule. It comes with everything pictured on that website aside from the pop filter.

Here is a demo song I recorded for my friend Lauren. Recorded into my Ta@#$% M-3700. Some compression with a UAD 1176LN and some reverb but no EQ was applied.

I'd usually be interested but can't be. You will probably get a lot more interest though if you show pics of your actual build so that people can see your DIY skill or lack thereof. Might also want to talk about what components (transformer, caps etc) that you used. Big ups though for building a mic, its on my list of projects and I've got a big chunk of the parts but haven't done the deed as yet.

Caps in the mic are Vishay and Nichicon. PSU came with the mic originally and voltages were fine (150V B+ & 6V heater) so I left it as it was. I used the tansformer that came with the mic because its ratio is 6:1 which is the correct ratio for a G7. I etched the PCB myself and sprayed it with a protective coating.

This wasn't my first G7. I built one using Tim Campbell's capsule and it is magical. I built this one because people were raving about these RK12 capsules. I've also built a GSSL compressor and a pair or Royer modded SDC mics which most people know are not as easy to build as the LDC because there's no PCB layout.

I'll post pics and some sound files soon, just seeing if there's any interest for now.

I saw a rubbish looking one with a DIY headbasket sell on GroupDIY recently for $550 so I'll start it there and see what happens.

One thing I will note is that the window in the front isn't worth much as the heater isn't bright enough to be seen in a well lit room. The stock PCB that came in the mic was hilarious because they mounted an orange LED in the tube socket to shine through the tube and give the illusion of a bright heater

I've grounded it correctly so there's no buzz or hum. I can head out to my studio this weekend and dig up a recording sample.

Not at all, when I bought the components to build my G7 I bought double of everything so when I finished I turned this Chinese mic into a G7 just for fun. It had a 34mm K87 style capsule in it but I used the C12 style because people online seem to like it. I actually really like the recording I did with Lauren and it's making me second guess my decision to sell it.

Cool. I had a listen, the recording of Laurens voice is very nice.
I'm kind of on a mission to find a mic that can give the Neumann M49 sound without the price tag. My Sony C38's can get close with a bit of eq, but I'll never forget the sound I heard when I borrowed an M49 and used it for room sounds.
Maybe one of these G7 variations could get there...
