console suggetsion....
I have copied the questions from NYMO's thread..I didnt want to derail his...
but the questions are spot on for what I am seeking....
sooooo

thats decent budget for a small console
MY budget probably extends up to 4000 tops, but 3K is better.
what do you actually require? (number of sends? groups? press or just line mixer?)
16 channels min, 24 is great.
2 sends post fader min
Groups would be nice, but not a deal breaker
Preamps, nice, again but not a deal breaker.
are you tracking or mixing or both?
I am really just mixing. I have enough preamps to go straight into the A-D convertors..
depending on your requirements you should something good for that money/ number of channels.
I am really looking for, nice 100mm faders, nice eq 4 band two sweepable mid if I can get it.. though if the EQ is marvelous I dont care really if its 2 band if you get my point. I am thinking of four band for things like mixing toms.
Ideally, VU meters on each channel or the ability to set up a VU meter bridge.
AFL Solo would be great
I would like to be able to get my fingers into the eq controls without knocking everything else around them.
I have been considering Toft ATB 08. But the reliability stories are just scary.
I am not averse to going at something with a soldering iron.
thanks
Pete

Gary here from the AGGH forum, and yes, 32 channel Dayner D + R desk for sale for $2,500.
Here is a brief promo:
"And without a doubt, the D&R's are the quietest consoles I have ever heard. The build is stellar - especially if you adhere to a "less is more - straight wire" philosophy. The pre's are not Neve's, but for transparent pre's they are ABSOLUTELY workable. At times, approaching and surpassing my API's, SHadow Hills, or Purple Biz's, depending on what I'm after - but definately in the same class. The design (like the true i/o module, floating subgroups, master control fader and features far ahead of their time on the Cinemix and Octagon are just now being implemented on Digital Control Surfaces and other console formats) I'd say that's good design on D&R's part, but of course you might differ. The EQ is workable. Not an API550 or 1081, but definately workable. The lack of "Q" control on my OrionX is the biggest problem for me. So you didn't like your 4000. No reason to dfegad all over the line. They are solid consoles and a first choice for many who cannot spend $300,000US for an analog desk. And frankly, who can anymore?"
Its a great desk: virtually NOS, but bumps and knocks from storage moves. You can contact me on

is this the same console listed at mixmasters for 7000??? Cause there is one listed on gumtree in Bondi atm, for 2500 and when I was searching for info on the cosole, I came across exactly the same photo on mixmasters site as the gumtree ad.

Wouldn't surprise me. Mixmasters' listed prices are overinflated at best of times.

They must be listening, the price has been reduced to 3.4K. But also noticed the Smart AV surface also on Mixmasters for 22K, which I assume it was the Sydney based owner who ran it thru ebay this week with no takers at 10K.

Re: console suggetsion....
Most of the gear for sale on Mixmasters website isn't "their" gear, nor is it their prices.
...it is on consignment and the owners of the gear set the price. I was going to advertise a soundtracs desk with them years ago. The problem is, they take a commission so if you want to get the price in your head your asking price becomes overinflated to offset the cut mixmasters takes.

Plus they have to add GST. I just bought something from Mick, and he negotiated a price with the owner that was more in-line with ebay prices.

Re: console suggetsion....
Yeah, that's fair enough, but the question is: " Who will pay the price that's going to make all the parties involved satisfied?" I mean,at this day and age when you can check the street value of a given piece of gear by a mouse click, it's hard to expect that someone will think a 40-50% higher price, negotiated down by 10% is a good deal.
Nothing against Mixmasters, actualy quite the opposite, but not sure how much gear they sell at those prices. (or even reduced by 10-20%)

Its a fickle business. Particularly in the current economic climate. There was an Auditronics desk on mixmasters with a price tag of $10000 or so. It ended up on ebay repeatedly with no takes at $1650. A 52 channel Soundcraft Ghost has been doing the rounds at $10000 too... which is nuts when you consider Stef's Soundtracs Jade struggled at that (outrageously low!) price.
Even Legacy Audio have a Roland R-880 advertised at over $4000! Nymo sold his for $850 with an extra remote! The answer your question... someone "might" buy it at those prices. Fair enough really. I am a bargin hunter... but some people out there may have waited a long time for something to come up on the used market and jump at the opportunity.

There's a Neve on ebay now for $70K, apparently in Sydney. (I'm guessing it belongs to someone that someone here knows...?)

While I'm not suggesting it isn't worth that, I just can't see anyone buying it at that price, or anywhere close to that.

I think it's the old ABC mobile truck console.
It would have been well looked after by them in the day.

Yes that looks like the old ABC Mobile Truck desk.
That's quite some desk - in fact I've been recorded by it.
From Audio Technology issue 39 article Recording the Eagles Live:
Engineer Dennis Fox was on ABC’s staff when the OB truck was delivered. He tells us more.
Dennis Fox: It’s a custom Neve console that was ordered by the ABC in 1975 and entirely built in England specifically for this truck. It was delivered as a complete unit in late ’76.
Neve in those days only did custom consoles. It has an engineering number but it doesn’t have a model number. This was absolute state of the art in ’76. In current terms it was a million dollar-plus console. It was custom spec’ed, a bit like the Abbey Road Neves. The required spec was +28dBm and Neve exceeded it by 3.5dB. It is completely solid state, there isn’t a single IC, not one electronic switch, everything is mechanical, everything is direct path. And you can replace everything, possibly barring the input and output transformers. There is no desk in the country that this cannot crack – I’m yet to hear a better-sounding console.
We don’t quite know whether the Melbourn sidecar came first or if the Melbourn became a production console based on the work Neve had done on a console like this one. Certainly the pre’s on the Melbourn are the same as what’s on the console. The console and the Melbourn were obviously constructed at the same time.
