I'm selling one of my vintage Telefunken Siemens V77 tube microphone preamps, custom racked by Joe Malone at JLM Audio. I've owned a pair of these amazing preamps (both racked and matched by Joe) for several years now, but no longer need the pair, so it's time for this wonderful pre to find a new home!
This unit was purchased as a mint condition raw module from Germany, then custom racked with standard features for a modern preamp, including adjustable input & output controls, 48V phantom power, -20dB pad, phase reverse, 1/4" DI input and XLR input & output. This preamp is sonically identical to another classic Telefunken Siemens tube preamp - the V72 - yet it has an amazing +60dB of fully variable tube gain, instead of the maximum +34dB of gain found in the V72. The V77 produces a sound like the V72, but with the gain of the V76. The tube set up, choke and output transformer are identical, the input transformer is wound the same way, but with an astonishing 1:40 ratio (which is unheard of these days) because in order to get the required signal-noise ratio the V77 needed a different power transformer with two separate filament windings.
In operation, this preamp adds an incredible richness and depth to any instrument I've recorded, whether it has been vocals, guitars, piano, bass, strings, drums, horns, synths etc.
