Probably all good as a mic... but WTF?

Who stripped it ..?
And then the question is why .. ?

I mean really it makes me wince !

Maybe it was a black one ?
but even then it should have the nickel coat underneath

shouldn't make any difference to the sound of coarse and providing it has its serial numbers all good ,

Presumably it was stripped to remove previous ownership marks ..
but christ it makes me sad

lesson here is if you have a mic with somebody elses name on it and you are assured ownership is A-OK its fine to buy it so Leave the mic alone .. Its kinda like a tattoo .. Just live with it .

I have no idea what if any difference the stripping does to the price .. and obviously none to the usability of the mic but wow .. nah uh

That's how I bought it over 20 years ago....
Wasn't many floating around back then so I grabbed it.
At least it's not gold plated

.. i should add there still arent too many around , and the fact that some bright spark spent 5 hours with metal polish creating his master piece ( a brass shiney u47 fet .. until it was touched or exposed to the air.. then the serious error of his shiney plans were exposed ! )
i am not assuming it did anything to the sound or real value

hey can't you get these replated in nickel?
it looks a bit um gross at the moment, which might affect resale?

If anyone knows of someone who can renickel in a MATT finish in Australia could they please let me know.

I'm in two minds, if you restore it too much sure it looks good but It's no longer original, you could argue it's no longer original anyway, what's a a tarted up U47 fet worth. You can always pick those glossy replacement head grilles?

According to Neumann in Germany you can't get a replacement Neumann head grille anymore.

If you leave as is at least a buyer knows what they are buying and they can then decide what to spend/do.

nobody in australia is going to do it right its a weird process
there is a guy on ebay gets em done for the great unwashed at the same place neumann does ..
i think its like $500
if it was my mic it would have been there twenty years ago
or gunter could organise it i for you am sure

you don't want matt nickel,despite that being an available process. You want shiny nickel and then fine grit blasting to yield the matt finish

But of coarse rob is dead right

Thus the vibe .. Use the guys that Neumann use
In Germany or just keep it steam punk !
