no offence - tools for jobs of course
but just interested why you want that specific unit?

i used it all over the MGF records, cause it was all we had...
but since then havnt wanted to see one again!

I am curious too, why do you want one?
I had the same experience as Gigpiglet. I used them when there was nothing else. I guess they have a "sound" of their own....A nasty one.

why do you want a "crap" compressor?

(i remember it working well on particular bass parts)

There is a mod for the 3630 compressor. Apparently a simple removal of the gate detection circuit. Makes it sound more "dbx" apparently.

Yep, it uses DBX style vca's.

Possibly the worst compresser I've ever tried to use, it went from bad to worse the more u tweaked it.

Just looking for a dark (read - kills tone) and filthy (read - crap) compressor to squash my SP-1200.

As bagged out as they get, I actually always liked (shock!) the dark and brooding tone they had for certain duties..

I've still got my 2x 1176 Rev D clones for other compressing duties.

you could get a DBX 166 (original/ old/ black face) for a similar price i imagine
and then you would have a decent comp to use for other duties when required as well..

Well it's perfect for that job as any cheap Crapinger unit.

I bought a Yamaha GC2020 and that was pretty much my experience of it. I bought it after somebody told me they were good on bass, one channel was noisy as hell so it got taken out of the rack the same day.

I had the very unfortunate experience of only having one of those yammy compressors at a Foh gig I was mixing (it was in the house rack) I found it so bad, I couldnt bring myself to use it.

Possibly worse than the 3630.....

What's with bad comps and strange numbers.....

I just remembered I saw a3036 in the swap shop in Melbourne recently, 70 clams from memory......

does anybody know if the differences in vca make the sound of one model more preferable for dance music than others?
i believe the early one had Dbx 2150 and the later That 2180?
