Hey guys,

im slowly gathering up a collection of outboard gear, and i am currently searching for a Empirical Labs EL-8.

I've played around with a few and have been super impressed with their versatility and ease of use!

I'd be looking at paying around $1100 maybe more, if you have one for sale let us know!!

Cheers :D

Hi arolland94

Welcome to T-rock :)

Just a general heads up - around here there's a "not properly written down anywhere but everyone knows it" rule about putting your name and approximate location in your signature. Keeps everything friendly and personal.

Distressors come up semi-regularly around here, so you shouldn't have too hard a time finding one.

But dammit, now you've made me think about buying a Fatso again, and I'm trying to be good.

Cheers Manning

No problem, and as I said, welcome :-h

A quick search indicates that three distressors have been sold here in the last six months, so you might get lucky.

Interestingly, Gareth (of Gigpiglet Productions) claimed he bought two of them new for $2200... but he never explained how he pulled that off.

I'm now curious... Gareth?

And back to you - are you staff or student at RMIT?

2 new for $2200!! That's outrageous, if i picked up a deal like that i would be a very happy man.

And i'm currently a student at RMIT Manning :)

So my life as an engineer is in it's early days.

Well you're definitely on the right forum then.

I'm surprised how many young'uns don't avail themselves more of Turtlerock - the wealth of knowledge and experience here is absolutely overwhelming. I can confidently say that for pretty much any hit record in Australia in the last 30 years, someone on this forum probably had something to do with it. (Not me, of course).

The key to starting your career is potentially here as well. The grizzly old-timers are generally very accommodating of newcomers. So think of this place like an audio engineers pub, show a bit of respect to your elders, be helpful wherever you can, and you'll get paid back a hundred fold.

For what it's worth, I'm a pro musician with no audio engineering background who (foolishly?) decided to open a studio. Without Turtlerock I never would have managed it. Seriously.

yes they do sell a fair bit..
anything under/ around 1400 seems "fair"

i did buy a pair for 2200.. they were not new though. (as new/ mint condition/ in boxes)
but thats about as good a price as i expect you would get.

I heard this was a great place to look into for information, so i took it upon myself to join ASAP and i'm surprised that my fellow peers haven't done the same, but o well more knowledge for me :)

And hopefully in the future the option of opening my studio would be fantastic! Wow thats still an amazing price for 2, i'd be pretty happy if i stumbled upon a deal like that, but yeah $1400 is a reasonable price, i've seen a few on ebay and similar sites for around that.

LOL - "semi-regularly" means once every 2-3 months, not daily.

Still, I admire your good-natured persistence.

Are you any good with electronics? People handy with a soldering iron have a huge advantage over other contenders for junior positions in studios.

More importantly, you can build one of the many kit compressors (and pres and eqs) - this a great way of getting pro-level gear for a greatly reduced price (I've got a stereo 1176-D clone which pulls its weight admirably.)

Haha Cheers Manning,

just trying to ensure they come to me first when one is for sale!

And yeah i think i'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, i've been doing electronics work since about year 8 in high school, made a couple of guitar pedals and stuff. I'll make sure i advertise the fact that i'm quite the handy man when hunting down a job, or work experience.

It's just so hard these days, it seems like everyone wants to be an engineer! Which is understanding as its a pretty amazing job.

Definitely do that.

I think if you turn up at any studio in the country and offer to solder cables for free, you'll probably get a position.

If you want to come to Sydney, I'll give you food and accommodation. I know I've got TONS of stuff that needs doing. :)

Well, i guess i have a new one liner for when i approach studios! "I'll solder anything for free."

And if any recording is involved with this offer Manning, might have to take you up on it one day! Haha
