LAME is still arguably the best and most respected mp3 encoder. It's free and available in many varieties!

I always get the latest version from here: www.rarewares.org

Hey Andy!

Just buy it from the Avid store. Its only $20.

http://shop.avid.com/ccrz__ProductDetai ... store=shop

The license transfer alone for a used license costs $25 anyway. Second hand will always be more expensive, unless they are giving it away! Check out this guy trying to flip one for $5 - plus the $25 license fee. Its $10 more expensive than new!

Oh! And to address the wise cracks. The last 3 versions of Protools have native MP3 support. Its only HD8 and prior that need the MP3 option. :ar!

Nath, I have looked into it, but finding a motherboard that will house my 3 HD cards is a problem

There are plenty out there with 3 PCI slots. I used a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3... cost me $76 from ebay.
Its running an i7 870 processor... its hardly a cutting edge computer. Even when I built it, it wasn't cutting edge.

...but it kills a G5, and the Mac Pro 1,1 I had as well.

Strangely enough it is running Lion with HD8 and a bunch of Waves 9 plugins... none of which are official supported... but they have been chugging along without incident for almost 2 years.

I assume you are referring to the fact that PCI slots 1 & 2 are separated by a PCIe slot? There is a chap on the DUC that makes and sells flex cable extenders. Handy little gizmos that allow you to put a core card in PCI slot 1, and accel/processing cards in PCI slots 2 & 3, and still be able to connect the flex cables without any issues. You won't be able to put a full height PCIe card in the slot in the middle though.
